The musical theater class at Dana Middle School, led by award-winning teacher and director Mr. W. William “Bill” Cobb, will perform “Pirates of Penzance” at Dana Middle School’s Ann Trip Jackson Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 19. as part of a well-honed production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta.

“Pirates of Penzance” tells the story of a young pirate, Frederic, on the cusp of completing his period of indentured apprenticeship.

The naïve Frederick will now be free to disembark from his life as a pirate for more honorable ways. When he arrives on shore he immediately falls in love with Mabel, one of Major General Stanley’s daughters. When Frederic’s former mates arrive and wishes to marry the major general’s other daughters, the police become involved in this farcical test of loyalty and duty that satirizes British moral sensibilities of a bygone Victorian era.

Principal players include Andrew Garland as Frederic and Grace Allen as the Pirate King.

Dana’s fifth- and sixth-graders have been delighting audiences with musical productions ever since the campus at 1775 Chatsworth Blvd. reopened for sixth-graders in 1998 and, in 2001, for fifth- graders as well.

Many of Cobb’s students graduate from Dana Middle to the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), the premier public arts magnet within San Diego Unified School District.

Tickets are $7 and may be purchased in advance by visiting www.danamid-dle.com and clicking on “Jackson Theater Box Office.” Tickets will also be available at the door but it is advisable to purchase early, as seats are already selling quickly.
