As a San Diego resident and individual property owner in Mission Beach, I am committed to operating my short-term rental with respect for my community and neighbors. I have dealt with uncertainty for close to five years – going back and forth with City Council, town councils, and resident groups, trying to find a sensible agreement to protect the interests of residents and allow responsible short-term rentals.
The City of San Diego, Expedia Group, and Unite HERE Local 30 have forged guardrails by reaching a historic memorandum of understanding, or MOU, that lays the foundation for responsible short-term rental regulations. It provides a clear path forward for continuing our businesses while addressing the issue of bad actors who demonstrate disregard.
Short-term rentals help grow their communities, with guests shopping and eating locally, supporting local businesses in the process. Places like Mission Beach have welcomed short-term rental guests for nearly a decade, making the rental culture part of the unique fabric of the community.
The MOU offers a commonsense way forward and much-needed peace of mind to short-term rental owners and residents alike. I urge the City of San Diego to finalize this MOU into law.
