After having a house full of company for the past 11 days, and cooking for everyone, I saw a Grubhub ad on my email I thought it might be nice to have someone else do the cooking for me. When I saw the listing for the new Z&F Chinese Food restaurant on Shelter Island, I knew that karma had taken over and that’s what we would do for dinner.

I looked at the menu and decided that I would order items that I could compare with the several other Chinese restaurants in the area. The first thing I ordered was cream cheese wontons. Then I was going to order egg rolls, but found that several of their plates included egg rolls, so I took that off my order menu and made sure I ordered something with egg rolls part of the plate.

I ordered the shrimp with mixed veggies with rice and an egg roll for $9.45 from their “full day special” menu and also ordered a vegetable chop suey special that also came with rice and an egg roll for $8.45. When I placed the order, I was asked if I wanted white rice or fried rice for $1 more, so I ordered one of each. I also asked for hot mustard to go with the cream cheese wontons.

The vegetables were delicious. They were not overcooked. They were tasty and seasoned well. I was disappointed that there were only four shrimp, but those four medium-size ones were succulent. Miki even commented on how good they tasted.

Both of the sides of rice were cooked and seasoned well. I thought that it was interesting that Miki, my Japanese student, liked the fried rice better than the steamed rice, because we frequently have steamed rice with our meals and that is what she is used to in Japan. The egg roll shells were very hard to bite into, but the filling was good, and the cream cheese wontons were tasty also. I did not get the hot mustard that I requested when I placed my order.

Both Miki and I were disappointed that we did not get fortune cookies with the order, but since it was the first time I have ordered from this restaurant, I am not sure if it was an oversight or if they just do not include them with orders.

Overall, we were very happy with the meal; there was a lot of food; it was cooked well and was tasty. The total price was approximately $25, and there was no delivery charge from Grubhub. Without question I will try the restaurant again, and order from their other offerings, including appetizers, soup, noodles and rice, chicken, beef, port, seafood and vegetables. If this dinner was any indication, I think that everything will be tasty.
