    Beach-side restaurants in Pacific Beach find new ways to expand dining

    As if the latest COVID restrictions were not confusing and concerning enough, local restaurateurs are now trying to handle indoor dining while increasing outdoor seating.

    Billy Ramirez, owner of PB Shore Club and the Fish Shops in PB and Point Loma, said coastal restaurants are being hit hard.

    “Obviously with all the hard times hitting the restaurant industry, businesses are being forced to get creative,” said Ramirez noting he and the Waterbar next door to PB Shore Club on Ocean Boulevard, jointly decided to explore outdoor dining options.

    “We decided that maybe we could grow out more toward the beach, instead of into parking lots in the alleys,” said Ramirez, noting that effort culminated in 26 parking spaces next to the lifeguard tower and fire station on Ocean Boulevard between Grand and Thomas avenues being temporarily converted to outdoor dining.

    Up and running for a couple of weeks now, Ramirez said the new outdoor dining option has hit something of a snag.

    “Some of the locals are upset about the temporary loss of parking,” he said. “I understand their concerns. But businesses have to survive. This is a way to help us stay open. This is something the City needs to be forward-thinking about, perhaps extending this even beyond the shutdown, if they want to support businesses and help us grow and also survive.”

    Further complicating matters are Uber and Lyft threatening to ultimately withdraw from California, which Ramirez noted really crimps local restaurant and bar owner’s efforts to keep a lid on DUIs and irresponsible behavior.

    In response to an August court order requiring both rideshare companies to reclassify their California drivers as “employees” instead of independent contractors, they both threatened to leave the state. Subsequently, the California Court of Appeal issued an order temporarily permitting Uber and Lyft to maintain their current employment status. The court has also given the companies until early September to come up with plans for how they would comply with the law.

    “If we were to lose Uber and Lyft, that is going to impact business, something I don’t think the public is aware of,” argued Ramirez. “It’s a public safety issue because DUIs have declined with ridesharing. The government needs to rethink some of the unintended consequences of its actions a little bit better.”

    Meanwhile, restaurateurs like Ramirez continue to be strained to adapt to rapidly changing business circumstances.

    “Our business has been ever-changing,” said Ramirez. “We went from dining inside to dining six feet apart. and now dining outside on parking lots and streets. So we’re just rolling with all the changes. Hopefully, we can weather this storm, and 2021 will be a lot better than 2020 was.”

    Makes complete sense that restaurants should be able to take up parking spaces near the beach areas, but I could see why people who expect to be able to park nearby would be upset. What else can the city do to help these businesses? Maybe it's time for everyone to brainstorm a new type of social organization since the likelihood of continued viral mutations makes it look like this is the way of things for the future. Maybe time limits should be imposed on customers, or the city should allow/enhance recreational spaces for businesses to use..."beach cabana dining", etc?

    Some alcohol-serving business owners make it sound like they have no responsibility to prevent drunk patrons from driving, as though the absence of Uber or Lyft leaves no other party responsible for ensuring impaired patrons don't drive under the influence.

    The law should be: ONE AND DONE - LOSE YOUR LICENSE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE AFTER A SINGLE DUI CONVICTION. That should sober EVERYONE up! It is a life-and-death situation anytime anyone drives impaired. This would also motivate alcohol-serving businesses to prevent patrons from losing their ability to drive to their businesses.

    If you serve alcohol, you had better take action to prevent your customers from endangering others' lives, even if that means setting up and paying for your businesses' own rideshare or cab services.

    By now there should be clear and specific laws regulating how each of the various types of alcohol-serving businesses should be required to either arrange for alternative transportation or contact law enforcement for customers who are obviously impaired and intent on driving. It's an insult to everyone when these strong and clear regulations don't exist and/or are not effectively enforced.

    Coping. For restaurants in Pacific Beach like Bub’s at the Beach and Point Break, that’s what doing business has been all about the last six months since COVID struck.

    “Some of this stuff (metrics) just doesn’t make sense,” lamented restaurateur Todd Brown, who owns Bubs at the Beach at 1030 Garnet Ave., Bub’s at the Ballpark, and The Blind Burro, as well as being co-owner of Waterbar at 4325 Ocean Blvd. “It’s hard to believe this isn’t political. The impact has just been phenomenal.”

    “We need something (more),” said Mike Lee,  whose family-friendly eatery Point Break, at 945 Garnet Ave., combines a bowling alley with a late-night bar and dance club. “I do not see how restaurants will not go out of business and landlords be left with empty space. They’re (government) saying you can have 25% occupancy inside, which is a joke in terms of sustainability.”

    Pointing out he’s done parklets to survive, Brown of Bub’s noted he’s had to deal with blowback from outside parking spots he’s had to displace. He said people would be surprised by what sometimes goes down in PB parking spaces near restaurants.

    “In front of Waterbar we lost 12 parking spaces, which did not have time requirements,” Brown said. “Eight of those spaces, the same people parked there every day, and they didn’t move all day. We had a guy practically living in the parking space who used to get a campfire going there. There was another guy in a van who used the parking space four or five days a week as a mobile barbershop cutting hair. The (loss of) parking there is very overstated.”

    Lee said some of the new COVID health restrictions are unmanageable.

    “They want us to collect the names of every person that comes into the restaurant,” Lee said. “And then they want their phone numbers. You should see the names we’re getting. And the overwhelming phone number we’re getting is 867-5309. Do you think someone is really going to give me their phone number? It’s ridiculous.”

    The peak summer season is now over, which doesn’t bode well for restaurants trying to hang on.

    “Right now, I don’t know if we’re going to make it, it’s bare-knuckle brawling,” Brown said. “I’m praying I’m going to be able to keep the place open. But it’s going to be very tough. We finally opened back up on Memorial Day weekend, finally got enough traction, then boom, they closed us down again.”

    Added Brown: “The first-time closure was so sudden, we had food in the walk-in we had to give to employees and we got zero dollars back from that. Another thing people don’t realize is restaurant equipment is meant to work continuously. If you don’t shut it down right, you can lose it. We’ve lost more equipment in the last six months than in the last five years. It’s just another burden that’s been financially difficult for us.”

    Lee questioned many of the mandated pandemic restrictions.

    “These arbitrary rules are just damaging to the restaurants and they are just creating liability in so many ways,” he said, adding that doesn’t even begin to address the cost of compliance to restaurateurs like himself.

    “Putting together outdoor dining isn’t cheap,” Lee said. “We’re basically building a restaurant (outside) every week. We’ve had to buy tables, chairs, umbrellas, tents, and Astroturf. It costs you $10,000 before you even make a nickel back. The last thing you need is that out-of-pocket expense.”

    Added Lee: “The health department comes up with ideas that may sound OK on paper, but when it comes right down to it, the repercussions on the restaurant business just make it impossible (to comply). Starting and stopping restaurants, or any other business is not sustainable. There are going to be an incredible, historic amount of restaurant closures this year.”

    AIRPORT TRAFFIC RETURNING
    Air traffic at San Diego International Airport is rebounding, but gradually. Sabrina LoPiccolo, airport senior communications specialist, gave these post-COVID numbers for airport traffic:
    April: Passenger traffic through the TSA checkpoints was down as much as 95 percent.
    July: Passenger traffic through TSA checkpoints was down 74 percent. 
    August: Passenger traffic through TSA checkpoints was down 71 percent.
    September to date: Passenger traffic through TSA checkpoints is down 67 percent.
    “Since COVID-19, we saw the most passengers through the TSA checkpoints on Sept. 4, (15,334),” LoPiccolo said.

     

    INDOOR CYCLING OUTDOORS
    SoulCycle is bringing SoulOutside to Westfield UTC, beginning this week for an eight-week series. SoulOutside will feature SoulCycle’s signature 45-minute indoor cycling class seven days a week at Westfield UTC’s open-air upper level deck above the SoulCycle studio location at The Pointe. More than 40 bikes will be spaced 6-feet apart under a tent with riders pedaling with individual headphones silent disco style to ensure strong sound quality while outside.
    The coming week’s classes will be available for booking here every Monday at noon, one bike is also being reserved in every class for essential workers to enjoy a free ride. The safety of the community remains SoulCycle and Westfield UTC’s top priority, and heightened cleaning processes, social distancing practices, and face covering requirements are being implemented to ensure the health and safety of riders, staff and instructors.     DINE DIEGO KICKS OFF

The California Restaurant Association is putting on this program to help support local restaurants by waiving all membership and registration fees.     LIFEGUARD TRYOUTS SEPT. 17
    On Thursday morning, Sept. 17, the City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s Lifeguard Division will conduct a tryout session for applicants interested in becoming ocean and bay seasonal lifeguards. In order to be considered for admittance into the lifeguard training program, prospective recruits must complete a 500-meter swim in less than 10 minutes. These applicants will also have the opportunity to interact with current and former SDFD lifeguards, and view some of the equipment they will use during their lifeguard careers.
    “Lifeguarding in San Diego isn’t just sun and sandy beaches. Lifeguards must be physically and mentally ready to respond to an emergency at any time,” said Lifeguard Chief James Gartland. “For those who can meet the demands of the job and become a lifeguard, I guarantee they will never have more rewarding or unique job experience.” 
    With more than 40 miles of oceanfront and bay shoreline to patrol throughout the City, SDFD lifeguards help keep an average of 17 million visitors safe and conduct an estimated 7,000 rescues at local beaches each year. Additionally, lifeguards manage cliff, scuba and swift water rescues, enforce boating safety regulations, and respond to emergencies involving seafaring vessels and other watercraft.

     

    PBTC WEED ABATEMENT
    Pacific Beach Town Council’s next weed abatement project will be Saturday, Sept. 26 starting at 7 a.m. This next weed abatement project is the Pacific Beach portion of Soledad Mountain Road, where weeds are rampant on the medians and sidewalks. The PBTC volunteer table will be at the corner of Soledad Mountain Road and Beryl Street, where volunteers can pick up tools and supplies. Please bring this waiver to the event (waivers will also be available at the sign-up table).
    It is recommended that volunteers bring gardening gloves, sunscreen, visors or hats, and drinking water. Masks are mandatory when working near other people.     THE ROSIN BOX PROJECT
    The Rosin Box Project will launch its new virtual subscription available starting Sept. 12. The first installment, on Sept. 18, is the IN FOCUS Film Series, a month-long series of original dance film premieres with one mission: to propel contemporary ballet in San Diego from the stage to the big screen.     LA JOLLA PLANNING SUPPORTS HOME REDEVELOPMENT
    At a Sept. 3 Zoom meeting with more than 70 participants, La Jolla Community Planning Association, which makes land-use recommendations to the City, voted 13-2-2 after extensive public debate to support a home redevelopment for Ted and MaryAnn Pintar at 7342 Remley Place. The project calls for demolition of an existing 3,196-square-foot single-family home and replacement by a new 4,923-square-foot single-family home.
    Several neighbors expressed their concerns about the possibility of the project’s impairing views, and about a planned garage some fear will pose access and safety problems in the neighborhood. Following the meeting, LJCPA trustee David Little resigned from the group in a letter reading: “The LJCPA has recently voted to approve projects that will result in code violations when built. This is never a good policy, but it is a particularly bad policy at this time when community planning groups are struggling to be relevant.”

     COLLEGE DISTRICT NAMES VICE CHANCELLOR
    Gregory Smith, a human resources manager with community college leadership experience, has been named vice chancellor of human resources for the San Diego Community College District. In his role leading SDCCD Human Resources, Smith will oversee a team that directly supports a district with nearly 5,000 employees across three credit colleges and a large noncredit division. Areas of responsibility include collective bargaining, grievance administration, academic and classified employment, classification, compensation, leadership and staff development, diversity and EEO compliance, payroll, benefits, retirement, risk management, legal services, and policy development. Smith will also serve as the district’s chief negotiator and as a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet.

    POINT LOMA PLAY
    Point Loma Playhouse at 3035 Talbot St. is streaming “Mass Appeal” by Bill C. Davis Sept. 11-13. The play is about Mark Dolson, a young seminarian, who comes to study and work with Father Tim Farley, an older priest who has burned out internally. When young Dolson begins to call Father Farley on his sloppy, passionless theology and his contradictions in his life, the fire roars.     COVID ANTI-BODY TESTING

    CORVETTE, THE LOT, REOPEN
    Liberty Station has announced that two of its high-profile tenants, The Lot movie theatre and Corvette Diner restaurant, have reopened. The LOT is now open for indoor movie showings and dining. The luxury cinema has joined CinemaSafe, a national coalition of theaters, to promote the safe return of moviegoers and employees. Alongside leading epidemiologists, this industry-specific organization developed a program of health and safety protocols that address the unique environment of movie theaters. Corvette Diner , a ’50s-themed eatery, reopened for indoor dining. While the arcade remains closed, the burger and milkshake joint is resuming operations with reduced hours: Friday to Sundays, from noon to 9 p.m. 

    LA JOLLA MATTRESS SHOP OPENS

    SDHS ACQUIRES WILDLIFE CENTER
    San Diego Humane Society has acquired the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona from the Humane Society of the United States. The 13-acre wildlife center provides care to wildlife, including native apex predators such as bears, bobcats, coyotes and birds of prey. With this additional center, known as Project Wildlife — Ramona, SDHS will expand its lifesaving capacity to rescue, rehabilitate and release additional species of injured and orphaned wildlife throughout San Diego County. It will also continue to care for 29 of the center’s existing ambassador animals, including a bear, bobcats, snakes and a pygmy hippo.
    “This a big step for wildlife and our environmentally conscious community,” said SDHS president Dr. Gary Weitzman. “By bringing this exceptional wildlife and conservation program into the lifesaving work of Project Wildlife, we’ll be able to care for many more orphaned or injured wild species from hummingbirds and owls to bobcats and coyotes.”
    San Diego County is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the United States with the greatest number of endangered species. People from all over the county bring wildlife patients to San Diego Humane Society’s Project Wildlife program for care.

    DISTRICT 1 CANDIDATE FORUM

    Moore: As a councilmember, he will pull self-dealing special interests out of the shadows, and work hard to make the rest of San Diego resemble the model that La Jolla has set as a thriving walkable community with respect for its beautiful surroundings and robust citizen involvement.

     

    MAVERICKS WELCOMES NFL BACK
    The return of football is this week, and Mavericks Beach Club is where you’ll catch all the action this season. Not only has the PB beach bar added seven more TVs for optimal viewing, but they’ve also expanded seating along the sidewalk in front and into their side parking lot, where an additional bar has been set up.
    Starting Sunday, Sept. 13, Mavericks will open at 9 a.m. every Sunday, and football specials will be available from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Drink deals include $4 Budweiser, Bud Light, and Bud Light Seltzers, $5 Stella Artois, and $20 mix-and-match coolers (limited to any Budweiser product). With brunches early in the day and snacks, such as Mavericks’ wings, which come in seven flavors including garlic Parmesan, BBQ, and lemon pepper.     BLOOD DONATION
    San Diego County Credit Union is hosting a blood drive on Sept. 8 at its 3455 Sports Arena Blvd. branch from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic there is currently an extremely low inventory of blood, hospital shelves are almost empty, and this short supply is affecting thousands of patients. The community is encouraged to help – lives depend on it.
    Blood donations are especially critical at this time of year after a busy summer season, and this year has been especially challenging. While an increased need for blood exists, donations have decreased due to businesses and community partners being unable to host normal drives due to newly implemented work-from-home policies.     GREEK CAFE COMING TO LA JOLLA
    Following more than two decades serving traditional Greek cuisine in Coronado, Spiro’s Greek Café will soon launch a second location in La Jolla. The Chaconas family has taken over the 1,220-square-foot space with a 570-square-foot patio previously occupied by a Cold Stone Creamery in La Jolla for a second location. The restaurant will offer the same menu of Greek favorites as well as a list of local craft beer and wine.     MISSION BEACH CLEANUP SEPT. 12
    A new citizen advocacy group Don't Trash Mission Beach, donttrashmissionbeach.com, has been formed. The new group has announced a beach cleanup for South Mission Beach, along with a beach trash art exhibit-installation to bring awareness of beach trash and its impact on the environment, on Saturday, Sept. 12 starting at 7 a.m. at Belmont Park on the boardwalk south of the roller coaster.
    The advocacy group promotes 'Pack It In and Pack It Out' along with personal responsibility and hopes that a community-visitor trash awareness campaign can precipitate change for Mission Beach. The event is presented by Don't Trash Mission Beach, Friends of Beautiful Mission Beach, and is sponsored by Belmont Park, The Felice Agency, Olive Baking Company, and ScootScoop. In addition, Pacific Beach Town Council and The Mighty Bin, a Zero Waste store, will be in attendance. 
    The event will occur during Coastal Clean-Up Month and National Cleanup Day. The beach cleanup will begin at 7:30 a.m. when volunteers will meet at the park and clean the beach and surrounding area until 11:30 a.m. Bags, gloves, grabbers, and sanitizers will be provided. Everyone will wear masks and observe social distancing. The Beach Art-Trash Exhibit will showcase from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. The display will feature rescued items such as hundreds of shoes, towels, toys, and personal items.     RETURN OF POLITIFEST
    Politifest, an annual public affairs summit produced by Voice of San Diego and launched in 2011, will take place virtually during the week of Sept. 29 through Oct. 3. Politifest focuses on issues affecting San Diego communities and features a robust schedule of debates, panels, and one-on-one interviews with experts. It also provides a platform for residents to raise their voices, ask tough questions, and delve into important issues. It’s a crash course in politics and policy. This year’s summit will examine local races, ballot measures, and major public issues through a future-facing lens: How will this year’s election affect our future? What are the implications for work, education, and our communities?

    WEED ABATEMENT VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT 
    Pacific Beach Town Council is seeking volunteers for weed abatement in the community on Saturday, Aug. 29 starting at 7 a.m. Overgrown weeds were recently removed by volunteer PBTC board members from a section of the median on Mission Bay Drive by the I-5 south on-ramp. Help is needed to tackle the rest. A volunteer sign-in table will be at the parking lot west of Mission Bay Drive near the entrance to Mission Bay Park. Donations to help defray the cost of tools, supplies, dump fees, and extra materials for this and future weed removal projects involving large groups of community volunteers is welcomed.

     

    Extra tools for volunteers to use will be purchased, but bring your own tools if you have them. Loppers are highly recommended for the thicker weed stalks. Other handy tools include push brooms, shovels, and large dustpans. Contractor-grade garbage bags will be provided. It is recommended volunteers bring gardening gloves, sunscreen, visors or hats, and drinking water. Masks are mandatory. PBTC board members Charlie Nieto, Susan Crowers, Ron Walker, and Brian White took to the task of removing overgrown weeds from a small section of Mission Bay Drive this last Saturday.

     

    FIRST RESPONDER FUNDRAISER

    FIDO URGES FIESTA ISLAND CLEANUP
    Fiesta Island Dog Owners (FIDO) has had to cancel all of its three traditional I Love a Clean San Diego cleanups in 2020. The most recent cleanup event was October 2019, and there probably won't be another one until early 2021, if then. But that doesn't mean cleanup isn't needed. The beaches are being used heavily and Fiesta Island is extremely popular.
    This year, the California Coastal Commission is expanding its usual Coastal Cleanup Day throughout September, and FIDO would like to invite all of members to participate. There are no large, centrally organized cleanups this year. Instead, every day that you can in September, bring along extra bags when you visit the island and pick up any trash you see – or a few of those extra poop piles that sometimes get overlooked. Take a photo cleaning up and post it to Facebook or Instagram (Fiesta_Island_Dog_Owners).

     

    BLOOD BADLY NEEDED
    San Diego Blood Bank is issuing a call to the public to make appointments to donate blood in the coming months to avoid a severe dip in donations due to the hiatus of school blood drives due to COVID-19. As back to school season approaches, many districts will be hosting classes online and not hosting their regular blood drives. San Diego Blood Bank is working with schools on creative avenues to support blood donation, such as community drives. However, high school and college blood drives would normally start this week meaning the loss of hundreds of pints of blood.  
    Approximately 20% of the blood SDBB normally collects comes from high schools and colleges,” said San Diego Blood Bank CEO David Wellis. “It’s critically important that we make up for those pints we would have collected at schools, so we need people to make appointments for the next couple of months.” To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds and be in generally good health. Appointments are required and available at sandiegobloodbank.org or by calling 619-400-8251. 

     

    GOODWILL IS BACK
    As Goodwill retail stores and donation centers reopen, program participants continue to be brought back to work. On March 15, the organization was asked to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. Prior to the shutdown, the nonprofit employed 1,400 community members. Today, Goodwill San Diego employs 894 people in San Diego County, 47.2% of whom are persons with a disability or other barriers to employment. Goodwill San Diego’s social enterprise gratefully accepts donations of clothing, shoes, home décor, household items, small appliances, electronics, sporting goods, and furniture. Coastal area Goodwill locations include 3663 Rosecrans St., 1430 Garnet Ave., and 761 Girard Ave.

    UNCOLLECTED TAX REFUNDS
    Many people could use extra cash during the coronavirus pandemic. That’s why the San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office is doing all it can to reunite $450,324 in county refunds with its rightful owners. See if your name is on the list at sdttc.com. The Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office has 1,190 refunds in a list that is easy to search on its website. If you are owed money, follow the instructions on the unclaimed money page to file a refund claim by Oct. 26, before the money is rolled into the county’s general fund.     LA JOLLA MEMORIAL BENCHES VANDALIZED
    Two wooden benches on the 7900 block of Girard Avenue were vandalized recently with missing wooden planks as a result. A police report has been filed and the La Jolla Maintenance Assessment District (MAD) is working with SDPD Northern Division to investigate. La Jolla MAD recently began a pilot project to refurbish these wooden benches in the Village, which is why there are recent photos of the benches and a numbered catalog of benches corresponding to their location and a notation of the memorial placard on each bench.     ANIMAL DISEASE TRANSMISSION CHALLENGING
    Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), delivered a special videotaped briefing and update on COVID-19 at the American Veterinarian Medical Association’s (AVMA) first-ever virtual annual convention, Aug. 20-22. Speaking to thousands of veterinarians, Fauci explained how approximately three-quarters of all emerging infectious diseases in human health have their origins in animals. These zoonotic diseases include SARS, H1N1 flu, and, most recently, COVID-19. Fauci praised the industry for its ‘One Health’ approach in addressing the challenges posed by these emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases, recognizing that human health is connected to the health of animals and our shared environment.     POST YOUR SUFFRAGE SELFIE
    Aug. 26 was Women’s Equality Day to culminate the centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment. Over the past several months, the entire country paused to recognize the courageous work of thousands of women who fought and won the right to cast a ballot at the polls. The 19th amendment is a major milestone for voting rights but not the endpoint. Remember that not all women were granted the right to vote in 1920. It would be decades before women of color could celebrate their victory with the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
    Today, the fight for voting rights feels as relevant as ever. Disappearing mailboxes, malfunctioning voting machines, and long lines at the polls are modern-day barriers for the disenfranchised. Let’s continue the work of making America a country where every voice counts – where every woman, every human, can live free.

Instead of marching through Balboa Park this year, the Women’s Museum of California, based in Liberty Station, will be hosting its annual suffrage parade across social media.     FREE MEDICAL CLINICS IN OB
    Two free medical clinics for the underinsured have reopened in Ocean Beach. They are:

    First Baptist, 4790 Santa Monica Ave., Wednesdays noon-3:30 p.m.; and ECC Clinic Episcopal Church, 2083 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., Wednesdays 5:30-7 p. m. Meal at 6 p.m. Graduate and undergraduate nursing students staff the free clinics that provide medical services, nursing care, mental health services, case management and social services to uninsured and under-insured people in Southern California under the direction of medical professionals and faculty.
    How to donate: For every $1 you donate the patient receives at least $10 worth of free medical services. Southern California Care Community is a nonprofit.     PENINSULA SINGERS
    The Peninsula Singers community choir welcomes singers with all levels of experience to join them for their fall season, which starts on Monday, Sept. 14. No audition is needed. Due to the current Coronavirus situation, this will be an online semester. The choir will meet on Zoom at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays for a community singalong, or ‘zoomalong.’ of a variety of songs – traditional songs, folk songs, camp songs, patriotic songs, spirituals, etc. – before transitioning to holiday music in November and December.     The choir is directed by Sarah Suhonen and accompanied by Stewart Simon on piano. The choir has performed at many venues throughout the community including U.S.S. Midway, the Point Loma Village Cultural Faire, Southwestern Yacht Club, Point Loma High School, several local libraries, and December Nights in Balboa Park. They have also performed at Carnegie Hall and the European cities of Prague, Salzburg, Vienna and Munich. Last year, the choir went on tour in Ireland.

     

    INDIE BREWERS TEAM UP

    NEW LA JOLLA RESTAURANT
    The local family behind Puesto Mexican Artisan Kitchen & Bar is venturing into Italian cuisine for their next restaurant, which will be adjacent to the 1026 Wall St. location of their popular Mexican eatery. Naming the new restaurant Marisi Italiano after their grandparents, Isidoro and Marila, brothers Eric, Alan, and Alex Adler, and cousins Isi and Moy have signed a lease for the neighboring Whisknladle space, which shuttered in May after 12 years in La Jolla.

    Mavericks Beach Club at 860 Garnet Ave. is adding a new cocktail to their lineup, the Mavericks Bubble Slushie.     UC SAN DIEGO HIGHLY RANKED
    The University of California San Diego has been recognized as both elite and affordable in Money Magazine’s annual ranking of the best colleges in America, ranked by value. The university placed third among public universities and ninth among 739 institutions in the nation. The ranking is based on graduation rates, the number of Pell Grant recipients, net costs to attend and alumni salary data. Each institution was ranked based on 26 factors in three categories — quality, affordability and outcomes — but this year, Money Magazine changed their rankings formula to put more emphasis on affordability, increasing the weight given to the affordability metrics to 40%.

    WELLNESS WORKSHOP ONLINE
    In an effort to help residents stay healthy, combat loneliness and improve their lives, the City of San Diego and Sharp HealthCare recently launched a community education video series available for free online. Sharp HealthCare is the City’s official health and wellness partner. The new virtual series will replace in-person sessions previously offered at City libraries.
    Topics for the online workshops include advance care planning, diabetes prevention, back pain management and dealing with isolation. The sessions are free and will be available on YouTube with the option to view captions in English or Spanish.     EMERGENCY RESPONSE BY SDHS
    San Diego Humane Society’s Emergency Response Team deployed today to Monterey to support a local animal shelter displaced by the River Fire. Once there, team members will provide animal care for farm animals evacuated by Monterey SPCA. The six-member team left San Diego Campus at 5500 Gaines Street at 1 p.m.

    USPS LAUNCHES ELECTION MAIL WEBSITE
    As part of its ongoing effort to ensure that voters and election officials have the information they need to successfully use the U.S. mail to vote in the November general elections, the U.S. Postal Service has launched a new Election Mail website. The website, which provides clear and concise information about voting by mail, is available 24/7 by going to usps.com/votinginfo.
    The Postal Service recognizes that many states are choosing to expand mail-in voting options in the upcoming elections and that there will likely be a significant increase in demand among postal customers to participate in those elections by using the mail. In response, the Postal Service has updated its website to serve both voting customers seeking information on how to use the mail to vote and election officials seeking resources to help make their administration of the upcoming elections a success.
    For domestic voters, the website provides direct links to federal election resources as well as links to state-specific resources. For overseas and military voters, the new site provides additional information, including links to resources supporting their election participation. The site also highlights what the Postal Service views as the most critical information for voters who opt to vote through the U.S. mail: that, in requesting or casting a mail-in ballot, they not only must comply with their local jurisdictions’ requirements but also should start the process early.
    To allow sufficient time for voters to receive, complete and return ballots via the mail, the Postal Service strongly recommends that voters request ballots at the earliest point allowable, but no later than 15 days prior to the election date. The Postal Service also recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their states’ due dates to allow for timely receipt by election officials. Voters should contact their local election officials for further information about deadlines and other requirements.

    AIRPORT RECEIVES AWARD
    Airports Council International-North America awarded San Diego County Regional Airport Authority with an Environmental Achievement Award in the area of outreach, education, and communication for the organization’s Airport Development Plan outreach efforts. The ADP envisions the replacement of Terminal 1 with a more modern facility and other improvements that enhance the airport experience for everyone. The Airport Authority’s ADP Draft Environmental Impact Report was originally released in July 2018 and then revised and recirculated in September 2019. For more than a year, the Airport Authority worked with regional stakeholders to refine the ADP. The Airport Authority Board certified the final EIR on Jan. 9.
    While the ADP was approved to move forward in January, the impacts of COVID-19 have given the Airport Authority pause to re-evaluate all capital improvement projects, including the ADP.  To date, the Airport Authority has put more than $220 million of airport Capital Improvement Projects on hold and continues to proceed very cautiously with all aspects of the ADP. There is flexibility to slow down, speed up, or stop work completely if needed.  

     

    CONGRESSMAN BACKS REINSTATING UNEMPLOYMENT
    Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) and 116 other members sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer urging them to take up a vote this Saturday on legislation to extend unemployment benefits to those who need it and ensure benefits last for the duration of the recession by tying enhanced unemployment insurance to the health crisis and economic indicators.

     

    FREE PREDIABETES WORKSHOP
    Sharp HealthCare announced that a new video will be released Monday, Aug. 24, as part of the series of free virtual workshops for San Diego residents presented by Sharp, the Official Health and Wellness Partner of the City of San Diego. Workshops were previously held at libraries and recreation centers in each of the nine City of San Diego districts and were moved online in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.     GRANTS THROUGH JCC
    For the third year, the Jewish Community Foundation is proud to have facilitated the Making A Difference for San Diego grant initiative on behalf of the Cushman Foundation, deploying $1.55 million in grants to 11 deserving organizations in San Diego County. All 2020 recipients demonstrated their impact through sustainable programs and/or services provided to veterans, seniors, or children. The Making a Difference for San Diego Grant Program was established in 2018 to provide grants up to $100,000 to at least 10 local organizations.
    Through the generosity of the Cushman Foundation, $1.2 million was granted to 15 organizations. Committed to providing funding for much-needed services to diverse communities and elevating or creating new programs that truly make a difference, the Cushman Foundation granted another $1.2 million to 19 organizations in 2019.
    The Cushman Foundation is proud to announce the 11 remarkable organizations selected as recipients of their 2020 grants: Casa de Amparo, Crisis House, East County Transitional Living Center, ElderHelp of San Diego, Home Start Incorporated, It’s All About the Kids Foundation, Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Mama’s Kitchen, Seacrest Foundation, The Angels Foster Family Agency, and The Honor Foundation.

    CHILDCARE GRANTS
    The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to distribute $25 million of CARES Act funding to eligible childcare providers in San Diego County this fall. To distribute the funds, San Diego County has partnered with The San Diego Foundation, YMCA of San Diego County and Child Development Associates. This coalition of partners will come together at a press conference on Aug. 20 to announce details about the Childcare Provider Grant Program and provide information about how childcare providers can apply.
    The San Diego County Childcare Provider Grant Program will provide funding to help keep childcare centers safe and allow them to remain open as families seek care for their children. The application will be available at SDFoundation.org/ChildcareGrants starting Aug. 24. Childcare providers will have 10 days to submit the information required for funding. Childcare providers can apply for support for staffing, supplies, mortgage and rental assistance, business resilience and capital improvements for outdoor areas.

     

    MARITIME MUSEUM REOPENING
    Maritime Museum of San Diego, serving as the community memory of our seafaring experience by collecting, preserving, and presenting our rich maritime heritage and historic connections with the Pacific world, will reopen to the public Aug. 22. The Maritime Museum reopened to the public for six days July 1-6 after closing temporarily due to the global pandemic for nearly four months starting March 16. The museum staff closely monitored the guidelines from the state, local and health authorities and have prepared the museum to abide by public health safety and CDC recommendations to ensure visitors enjoy a clean and safe experience. For more information, visit sdmaritime.org.

    Kerri Klein has affiliated with the La Jolla office of Coldwell Banker Realty as a broker associate. She comes to the office with 35 years of real estate experience.     MILITARY HEROES FESTIVAL
    Liberty StationRock Church, and USO San Diego will honor active duty service members and their families at the second annual Military Heroes Festival Saturday, Aug, 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Liberty Station with free groceries, giveaways, stuffed backpacks, clothing, family-friendly entertainment, and more. The festival-style event was transformed this year to a safe, drive-through-style event that will keep families in their cars throughout the experience and allow pre-screened, masked volunteers to engage with families while socially distancing.
    Entertainment includes live superheroes and popular characters placed throughout the route as well as FM transmitted messages from Rock Church, USO San Diego, and Commanding Officer Kenneth R. Franklin of Naval Base Point Loma. Families are pre-registered via USO San Diego and given a time slot at which to arrive. The route will take families 30-45 minutes to complete and spans across the south side of Liberty Station near Rosecrans Street and Womble Road, ending on the north side alongside NTC Park and Cushing Road.

     

    SAVE THE POST OFFICE
    This Saturday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to noon, people from all walks of life who are determined to defend the essential services provided by the United States Postal Service — including our ability to vote by mail — will push back on the Trump administration’s attacks by organizing a grassroots action at post offices throughout San Diego, and throughout the country, including one outside the Pacific Beach Post Office at 4640 Cass St. Groups including Indivisible, the Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights, MoveOn, NAACP, RuralOrganizing.org, Service Employees International Union, Vets for the People, and the Working Families Party are participating.
    Those joining the actions will call on Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to resign in the wake of mail slowdowns and will call on Congress to “protect and save the post office from Donald Trump” and act to safeguard the integrity of our mail and elections. The actions will show Americans coming together to stand up for a postal system that connects us, that we rely on for medications, paychecks, and more, and that will literally be counted on to deliver democracy in the elections this fall. To promote safety given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the action will take place outdoors and have a physical distancing plan, and attendees will be asked to wear masks.

    ENHANCE LA JOLLA ELECTION
    It is time for the Enhance La Jolla board of directors' annual election. This year, there are four three-year term seats available: One from the La Jolla Community Foundation, one non-profit property owner or property owner’s representative paying the LJMAD assessment, one residential property owner or property owner’s representative paying the LJMAD assessment, and one representative of the La Jolla community-at-large.

     

    Enhance La Jolla is asking for board nominations. All nominees and those making the nominations must be Enhance La Jolla members. Members are the current owner, or the owner’s representative, of a property, paying the LJMAD assessment and must be in good standing.

    FRIAR 5K RUN 
    The San Diego Padres are teaming up with EnMotive, producers of the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k series, to launch the first Friar 5k Virtual Race. All participants will receive a goodie bag featuring Padres-branded swag and themed 5k finishers medal, plus a baseball hat and more. The Friar 5k is a 3.1-mile virtual race in which participants have the option to run or walk the five-kilometer distance on the treadmill, sidewalk, or trail. All adult and youth entrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, baseball diamond finishers medal, a new logo branded hat, and custom race bib shipped directly to each participant. Funds raised through the 5K will benefit the Padres Foundation’s Covid-19 relief efforts providing support for frontline workers and combating food insecurity in San Diego.

    TORREY PINES FOOD OFFERING
    Torrey Pines Church in La Jolla and Saddleback San Diego Church will partner for a drive-thru, free grocery distribution from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 31, at the Torrey Pines Church parking lot, 8320 La Jolla Scenic Drive North. Free canned and nonperishable food items will be available for families who have been affected by the virus pandemic.
    Church officials said the food bank not only will provide free items to families seeking assistance as a result of financial losses due to COVID-19, but also will accept donations of food items from the public. Donated items can include spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, canned meat, canned soup, canned vegetables, cereal, pasta, rice, powdered milk and infant formula, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, hand sanitizer and wipes, bar soap, mouthwash, cough drops and supplements, such as Emergen-C.     ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MARATHON CANCELED
    The Rock ‘N’ Roll San Diego Marathon and half-marathon, originally scheduled for May 30-31 but indefinitely postponed, has been officially canceled and rescheduled for next year. “Unfortunately, after assessing all event scenarios and based on the continued mandate from the State of California, the [marathon] cannot take place in 2020,” said organizers in a statement. “The event will return on June 5-6, 2021. All registered participants of the 2020 Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & ½ Marathon will be receiving an email with further details.

    ADOPTABLE PUPPIES VISIT SHARKS

    UCSD CANCER RESEARCH
    Cancer immunotherapy, empowering a patient’s own immune system to clear away tumors on its own, holds great promise for some patients. But for other patients, immunotherapy just doesn’t work. Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have found evidence that helps explain why patients who are young and/or female have especially low response rates to some types of cancer immunotherapy. Their findings suggest that since the typically robust immune systems of young and female patients are better at getting rid of tumor cells, the cells left behind are not as readily visible to the immune system, to begin with, rendering some types of immunotherapy ineffective. The study was published in Nature Communications.
    “Now that we know why some patients don’t respond as well to immunotherapy, we can begin developing more informed approaches to treatment decisions, for instance, developing predictive algorithms to determine a person’s likely response before initiating immunotherapies that may have a high probability of not working or working poorly for them,” said senior author Hannah Carter, PhD, associate professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine.     LA JOLLA PLAY ON NETFLIX
    Diana: A True Musical Story,” a La Jolla Playhouse-born show, which premiered in Weiss Theatre a year-and-a-half ago during the 2018-19 season, will be filmed for Netflix and will air nationwide in early 2021. The production will be filmed without an audience on the stage of the Longacre Theatre next month. Helmed once again by Christopher Ashley, the play will feature the original Broadway cast, including Jeanna de Waal as Diana, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and two-time Tony Award-winner Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth. All of them starred in the La Jolla Playhouse production in 2019.
    This marks the first time a theatrical event will have its streaming premiere before its opening night on Broadway. “Diana” transferred to Broadway following its sold-out, extended run at La Jolla Playhouse. The show went on hiatus due to the pandemic before its scheduled Broadway opening on March 31. The musical is now set to open on Broadway in May 2021.

    MOSQUITO SPRAYING
    The County of San Diego Vector Control Program will conduct aerial mosquito larvicide applications on  Wednesday, Aug. 19, and Thursday, Aug. 20, to reduce mosquito breeding and decrease the risk of West Nile virus transmission. Granules of larvicide will be applied via helicopter to specific waterways known to breed mosquitoes throughout the San Diego region. The larvicide consists of naturally occurring bacteria that target mosquito larvae but are safe to people, pets, plants, and wildlife. 
    VCP staff will be at the locations during the applications to answer questions and monitor progress. Depending on conditions, aerial mosquito larvicide applications will occur every 3-4 weeks or as needed during the mosquito season from April through October. The best protection against WNV and other mosquito-borne illnesses is to prevent mosquito breeding and mosquito bites.     The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights has announced the theme for the 2020 holiday boat parade is “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” This year marks the 49th anniversary of the beloved San Diego tradition.

    August in Southern California is reserved for a special treat exclusive to the region – it's Hatch Chile season.     ARTIST’S RECEPTION
    R.B. Stevenson Gallery in La Jolla at 7661 Girard Ave., will exhibit “Here & Now” featuring new and recent paintings by San Diego artist Wayne Hulgin and Los Angeles artist Chris Trueman. The opening reception for the artists will be Saturday Aug. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. The gallery will be open at noon for early viewing. Trueman draws from a diverse lexicon of mark making including gestural painting, graffiti, colour field and with the deftly nuanced colour palette. Hulgin paintings are the visual language of mark-making, shape, and form, refined surfaces, bold color and nuanced edges, rendered silent by the delicately diffused obfuscation of the process that challenges visual communication and expands abstraction’s possibilities.

    GAMES JOINS COLDWELL BANKER

    Residents clean up with new Don't Trash Mission Beach group

    For a decade, Cathy Ives has been combing Mission Beach daily picking up trash. Now she has some help.

    Approached by fellow Mission Beach residents Tony and Tim Sanfelice, the trio has launched a new citizen advocacy group, Don't Trash Mission Beach, donttrashmissionbeach.com. The new group held its first volunteer beach cleanup for South Mission Beach on Sept. 12.

    That cleanup saw another community first: A Beach Trash Art Exhibit- Installation crafted of disposed of items, to bring awareness of beach trash and its impact on the environment. Don’t Trash Mission Beach promotes 'Pack It In and Pack It Out,’ along with personal responsibility and hopes that a community-visitor trash awareness campaign can precipitate change.

    The Sept. 12 Beach Art-Trash Exhibit featured rescued items such as hundreds of shoes, towels, toys, and personal items. In addition, there were scores of other items like bottle caps, cigarette lighters, vaping materials, and other things carelessly left behind or purposefully left on the beach every day. 

    Speaking from a local laundromat where she was busy doing her regular routine washing towels she’d collected from beachcombing, Ives said of the Sanfelices, “They contacted me directly after they’d started picked up trash and realized how bad it was and that it’s a global issue, not just here.”

    Noting she considers herself a “rescuer,” Ives added, “I pick up the big stuff, towels, beach toys. My goal is to get as much that’s reuseable and recyclable off the beach.”

    Ives arises before dawn at 4 a.m. to begin beachcombing. She starts in South Mission Beach and works her way up the boardwalk.

    Tony Sanfelice said he and Tim were inspired by Ives.

    “We were blown away by her commitment to the community and decided to help out, but also to bring the experience of our branding and marketing company, the Felice Agency, feliceagency.com, to amplify her voice and turn her passion into a movement. Tim and I started picking up trash on our own after seeing so much of it carelessly left by people on the sand, near the shoreline, in the jetty, and in the park.”

    "In the last three years, I have picked up over three tons of trash just in South Mission,” said Ives. “Fortunately, both Tim and Tony decided that a larger campaign was in order, and the three of us decided to launch Don't Trash Mission Beach. This coincides with PB Trash Pickers and PB Street Stewards, OB Street Stewards, and other beach trash advocates. We are all sick of the trashing of our neighborhoods, and so we thought we could raise awareness and advocate for change if we put our heads together."

    Tony Sanfelice said they’re also developing another cleanup program where “you can adopt a court in Mission Beach. Eventually, when we have enough sponsors and donations, we’ll be able to get people grabbers and trash bags. We also have T-shirts that you can buy now on our website to help us out.”

    Tony said he and Tim daily collect about 100 pounds of trash. “Cathy probably collects 300 to 500 pounds,” he said. “Last year, she picked up 53,238 items including 8,000 cigarette butts, 570 lighters and 509 pairs of shoes, as well as Styrofoam boogie boards and single-use plastic water bottle tops that are so dangerous to the environment and kill dolphins and sea turtles.”

    Asked why she’s taken it upon herself to pick up other’s trash, Ives responded, “I hate waste. I hate the fact that so many people in need could use these things, which are just thrown away by our disposable society. I donate to animal shelters that need towels and blankets and to the homeless who deserve to have a warm place to sleep. I do it because it’s the right thing to do.”

    If you are an active registered voter, you can now sign up to track the status of your mail ballot ­ – when the ballot is mailed to you, when the Registrar of Voters gets it back from you in the mail and when it is counted.

    Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, every active registered voter in California will receive a ballot in the mail for the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election.

    The ballot tracking tool is new. Voters can sign up for Where’s My Ballot? at sdvote.com to receive automatic email, text, or call notification on the status of their ballot.

    It’s also a good idea for voters to double-check their registration in the next couple of weeks to make sure the Registrar of Voters sends the mail ballot to the correct address.

    The Registrar of Voters office will be preparing ballots for the mail by mid-September, and ballots will start going out to registered voters the week of Oct. 5. If your voter information is up to date you should expect to receive your ballot the same week.

    Voting by mail is simple, safer, and secure. The Registrar of Voters has launched an awareness campaign, Vote Safer San Diego, to educate the public on the safety, security and ease of voting in the upcoming election amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Those who want to vote in person will still have the opportunity to do so, but they may run into long lines, both at the polls and the Registrar’s office.
