Friends and family held a memorial and paddle out at Sunset Cliffs on Sunday, Aug. 11 for Point Loma native Mike White, a well-known angler, free diver, and surfboard shaper. Long time friend and former girlfriend Amy "Oklahoma" Steiner, who helped organize the memorial, shared her eulogy for her close friend Mike: “Mike was a great guy, not a dude or a bro, as he would correct you. We all knew he was a true waterman, a surfer, windsurfer, skateboarder, free diver, fisherman and whatever else he could do in his backyard, literally. “His family bought a piece of land on Ladera Street in 1964 two years prior to Mike being born. It would be the third home at Sunset Cliffs and an incredible dream for Charles and Sheris White’s unborn son to discover. “Mike was forever a cliff dweller, it ‘shaped’ his life (pun intended). Mike was so wise about the ocean and fearless. He originally was a fisherman sitting on a longboard way out in the kelp beds. His mother was strong and knew he was a smart boy. At a young age he would bring home dinner. “Then his sights were set on building himself a board, and the story explodes there. Mike was always curious, his brain didn't rest. He learned how to glass and became the go-to-guy laminating boards for Skip Frye and others. (In fact, the people who paddled out for his memorial almost all had boards he laminated with the ‘Great White’ shark logo.) “Mike was a humble guy. He was kind and extremely sensitive, his friendliness was his kindness. A true optimist, he threw himself into life. But Mike's life turned around when Clark Foam closed it's doors in 2005. The entire surfboard shaping industry dropped their collective heads. This industry was what Mike knew, and he became lost without it. “He became deeply depressed and eventually lost almost everything. He turned to alcohol. It broke everyone's heart. He eventually worked in construction, did landscaping and handy work around Point Loma, but stopped going in the water. “I dated Mike for nearly eight years, he was one of my greatest loves. There were good years when he got sober, but eventually, his heart broke and he crumbled. He had so many who admired him and when he grew ill, he suffered nearly alone. He and I spoke often and I saw him almost weekly with his friend Mike O'Brien. Mike did everything with passion and that’s why he had such admiration from his many friends. His positive spirit affected everyone he knew. “He was an amazing man and I was lucky enough to have had his friendship for 28 years. When we first met at the Cliffs in 1991, I told him I was from Oklahoma. After that, when I strolled the Cliffs I would hear his voice beckon ‘Oklahoma’ and he would greet me with his wide smile and reach out for a hug. I will forever be grateful and never forget him.”

What started out as a one-on-one personal training business took only two years to become a nation-wide movement. “I couldn’t keep showing up to my clients as just this fitness person when so much other stuff was happening in my life,” said Luci Lampe, entrepreneur and founder of the Sexy Mama Movement. “So, I started to let people in on my journey. What I’ve been focusing on is building an event experience where, when women show up, they don’t just throw out business cards, but they can be personal and share real stuff about what’s going on in their lives. Lampe is a singer, actor, model, author, fitness coach, wife, and mother of four. While Lampe had been a long-time “mom-preneur” with her own personal training business — helping new moms wanting to get fit again — Lampe’s business took on a new focus in 2015 after her husband Ryan injured his back and was diagnosed with a genetic nerve disease. “I felt like I was drowning under everything,” said Lampe, who at the time was expecting her and Ryan’s fourth baby and had just moved the family to Ocean Beach. “I would take walks along Sunset Cliffs and think, ‘I don’t know what I’m doing anymore with my business.’ I just wasn’t motivated to do fitness training. But I had to make a decision – am I going to be miserable until this is better, or am I going to find a way to enjoy and live my life?” In 2017, Lampe changed her business focus from body building to community building with the Sexy Mama Movement, providing support for entrepreneurial moms through accountability groups, informal meetings, luncheons and group events and retreats. “I started looking at the type of women who were coming to me for fitness help and it was all these visionary women doing the juggling act of being a mom and owning a business,” said Lampe. “So, I created a networking structure where women could walk away feeling seen, supported and actually connected to other moms.” In addition to business-focused lunches, as well as group Yoga, Zumba and belly dance outings for the moms, Lampe created an intensive 12-week program called, “Self Mastery for Mom Entrepreneurs.” focusing on being a mom, being a partner, being a business owner and how to balance it all. “It wasn’t just about fitness, it wasn’t just about business, it wasn’t just about being a mom, but it was about pulling all of those things together,” said Angela Quisumbing, founder of Angela Grace Events and a Sexy Mama Movement member. “I used to think that business and family were not to be mixed. I feel like we’re all raised to not mix business and pleasure. But the more I kept things separate, the more I struggled.” Quisumbing added: “Working with Luci and this large caliber of women, it taught me how to bring everything together in a comfortable way. I credit a lot of my growth to this program of accountability.” Lampe has published three books — “The Sexy Mama Manifesto,” “The Sexy Mama Morning,” and “Achieving Sexy” —and has accumulated 20 Sexy Mama Movement members from not just San Diego, but all over the U.S. Lampe is now looking to pass the Sexy Mama torch. “All this deserves a lot more attention than what I alone am able to do,” said Lampe. It needs a larger team of women to be the driving force. I don’t know who I’ll hand the movement off to yet, but when I know, I’ll know.” sexymamamovement.com.

Philadelphia may house the famous Liberty Bell and Moscow has its The Tsar Bell, considered the largest bell in the world still in existence. But the Point Loma area has its own bell to brag about, too. Known as The Yokohama Friendship Bell, it is located at 1401 Shelter Island Drive on the southernmost cul-de-sac of Shelter Island, and it was given to the City of San Diego from the City of Yokohama, Japan, as a symbol of eternal friendship in 1958. It’s date of placement is listed as July 31, 1958, according to the Port of San Diego archives. According to the Port of San Diego archives, the bell was presented as part of the Centennial Celebration of formal relations between Japan and the United States. This gift served to mark the establishment of a sister city relationship between San Diego and Yokohama, the first such affiliation on the West Coast. It was transported to San Diego by the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Prairie, according to the Port of San Diego archives. Dedication The Yokohama Friendship Bell’s bell house was dedicated on Dec. 10, 1960, which was a couple of years before the Port District was formed and when it was part of the city of San Diego’s Harbor Department, according to the Port of San Diego’s archives. Constructed with local materials, it was specially designed and cast in bronze by Masahiko Katori, who was Japan’s foremost artist in this field. It is 6-feet high, weighs 4,600 pounds and includes this inscription: “Bell of Friendship, presented to the citizens of San Diego from the citizens of Yokohama, as a symbol of eternal friendship, May 1958.” The inscription is also written in Japanese. It was tolled for the first time on Dec. 10, 1960, by Bishop Yamada of the Zen Shu Buddhist Temple. He was joined by then-Mayor Charles Dail and other civic leaders. It was tolled the traditional 18 strokes. “The bell is traditionally rung on New Year’s Eve. The ceremony is an annual event. Members of the San Diego Yokohama Sister City Society make the annual arrangements with the Port of San Diego, and the public is invited to be present and participate in the actual ringing. Each person can strike the bell once,” said Marguerite Elicone of the Port of San Diego. Repairs In 2009, the bell house was rebuilt with new redwood rafters, the deck repaired, and the landscaping and moat surrounding refurbished, according to Port of San Diego archives. Also, should you visit, near the bell is the Helen-Borshers Flowering Peach Tree, which was presented to the city of San Diego on Feb. 17, 2008 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the San Diego-Yokohama affiliation. There is also a bronze sculpture, "The Girl in Red Shoes," by Munehiro Komeno, which was placed on June 2, 2009. It's from a popular Japanese children's story, and a similar sculpture stands in Yamashita Park on Yokohama's waterfront. The plaque states that it was given to the citizens of San Diego by the citizens of Yokohama "for eternal friendship and to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Yokohama Port Opening, June 2, 1859." How it Works There is no clapper inside like most bells and is instead rung by being struck with a large wooden ram that is suspended horizontally across. To ring the bell, the ram is pulled back with a lanyard and released causing it to strike the bell. The design of the Japanese Bell is Japanese and in the Buddhist style, it is open on all four sides and surrounded by a moat. You can visit the Yokohama Friendship Bell anytime as there is no admission charge.

Celebrating International Cat Day with a super mom at San Diego Humane Society

San Diego Humane Society’s Kitten Nursery is caring for a cat who gave birth to 11 kittens. This is rare, as the average litter size for cats is three to five kittens. Even more unusual, the cat has 11 nipples – one for each kitten. On average, cats have six to eight nipples and they almost always have an even number. “A healthy litter this size is incredibly uncommon and certainly not something we see every day in the nursery,” said Jackie Noble, kitten nursery manager. The mother and her kittens were discovered by a good Samaritan inside a dumpster in downtown San Diego. The finder said it did not look like someone had dumped the animals there, but rather the mother thought it was a safe place to hide and take care of her babies. The cat and kittens are all in good health. They are receiving care at SDHS’s Kitten Nursery, where they will stay until the kittens are ready for adoption and the mother can be spayed. As cute as the kittens are, a litter this large highlights the importance of spaying and neutering. It is critical for the community to work together to spay and neuter community cats. Cats can get pregnant about every three months, so it’s possible for a single cat to have more than 200 kittens in her lifetime. Community cats can be altered through trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs. Community cats are trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated and ear-tipped for identification. After recovering, they are returned outdoors to live their lives without having any more kittens. SDHS offers free spay/neuter, vaccinations and ear-tipping for community cats at each of our three campuses. Learn more about community cats and TNR at sdhumane.org/services/community-cats/. International Cat Day is Thursday, Aug. 8.

Getting a cure for HIV is a powerful concept, often spoken of as the Holy Grail of HIV research. Although effective anti-HIV drugs have transformed HIV into a chronic manageable condition – a condition you live with, rather than die from – taking life-long therapy is a very different proposition to being definitively cured.

I put it to the whole human race that there is an affordable, scalable HIV cure that worked as well as would put the global eradication of new HIV infections within reach, while also transforming the lives of those now living with the virus.

Given the effectiveness of this drug in both treating and preventing HIV infection, I will say to everyone reading this, that i am a living witness to it. Unlike fraudsters and online scammers who will play you and leave you frustrated with lose of money and hope, this drug cost less and it is worth a try.

If you are interested in getting cured of your own illness,

Below is the communication link of the doctor who has the new medicine which i took that got me cure.

Its a pleasure for me to write this testimony about how i got my Genital Herpes cured a month ago. i have been reading so many comments of some people who were cured from various diseases by Dr. Edes, but i never believed them. I was hurt and depressed, I was too curious and wanted to try Dr.Edes, then i contacted him through his email (dredeshome@gmail.com) when i contact him, he assured me 100% that he will heal me, i pleaded with him to help me out. My treatment was a great success, he healed me just as he promised. He sent me his medication and ask me to go for check up after 14 days of taking the medication. i agreed with him and i took his medication and went for check up, to my greatest surprise my result was negative after the treatment, i am really happy that i am cured and healthy again. I have waited for 3weeks to be very sure i was completely healed before writing this testimony. I did another blood test one week ago and it was still Herpes negative. so i guess its time i recommend anyone going through Herpes HSV-1 or HSV-2, HIV, HPV, Hepatitis B, Diabetes, Cancer should reach him through his Email dredeshome@gmail.com OR add him on whatsapp 2348151937428.
