In addition to its breathtaking scenery La Jolla has something a lot of beachside communities don’t – sea caves. The seven La Jolla sea caves – The White Lady, Shopping Cart, Little Sister, Sea Surprize, Arch Cave, Sunny Jim and Clam Cave – can be identified from east to west. It is said the caves were formed from a 75-million-year-old sandstone cliff, and according to an LA Times article, they were originally used as a hideout for drug smugglers and some pirates. In addition, all but the Sunny Jim and The White Lady were named in the 1900s and 1800s by lifeguards to help identify landmarks during search and rescue missions, according to the same article. Speaking of Sunny Jim, it is the only La Jolla cave accessible by land; visitors can walk down 145 steps into a hand-dug tunnel after buying a ticket at the Cave Store. As the story goes, and according to La Jolla Historical Society archives, the Sunny Jim cave has a long history dating back to 1902. “The Sunny Jim Cave was one of seven La Jolla caves originally exploited as a tourist attraction in the early 1900s by Gustav Schultz, a German immigrant, artist, and engineer. Schulz, a self-proclaimed professor, artist, photographer and civil engineer, who dug a tunnel into it and provided public access from land, first by rope and then stairs, collected a modest sum from anyone wishing to enter,” said La Jolla Historical Society historian Carol Olten. “The same idea has continued into the present day with people paying a fee to make the descent  from inside the Cave Store into Sunny Jim, eponymously named after a historic cartoon character whose profile is vaguely suggested by the silhouette seen from looking oceanward through it,” Olten said. She added that for many years the store operated mainly as a shell shop for exotic and not-so-exotic-finds, but the merchandise today is more generalized with “beachy things, postcards, a few antiques and memorabilia.” Early Days In the beginning, visitors had to enter through the original Schulz’s Cave Store and lowered themselves down into the tunnel by a rope. Years later the steps were added and continue today, according to current Cave Store shop owner Shannon Smith. Smith said she has owned the shop for a few years now located at 1325 Coast Blvd. and it has become more of a souvenir store for those looking to take a bit of the nostalgia back home. “The store and cave continue to be popular attractions all these decades later we have thousands who visit yearly and probably hundreds daily,” she said. “We are the oldest continuously running business – we’ve been open more than 100 years. “When people go down the steps it takes about 10-15 minutes through a long tunnel and they end up on a platform inside the cave where they can take in the scene,” she said. There’s no swimming or jumping into the water and because it’s a sea cave the water comes in and out of the cave. “The water is underneath you, so you don’t get wet. People love it,” she said. However, some recent construction in the area has caused a bit of a wrinkle for the shop. “It has slowed down slightly but people are still allowed to drive down here but they can’t drive all the way down Coast Boulevard,” she said. “We still have a lot of visitors, but parking is limited. “The city is doing some repair work on Cove Cave, which is not accessible to locals or tourists.” According to Anthony Santacroce, senior spokesperson for City of San Diego, the city has taken safety precautions for the repairs. Crews began the emergency construction project to stabilize one cliff area on Aug. 8, and the roadway in La Jolla following an analysis by geology experts. He said experts discovered a zone of weakness where "Koch's Cave," (pronounced as "cook" and named after lifeguard Jeff Koch who made a daring rescue there in 1977) is located underneath Coast Boulevard and recommended action be taken. “We immediately shut down the street and initiated an emergency contract to reinforce the cave,” Santacroce said. As part of the stabilization project, sections of Cave Street and Coast Boulevard will be closed temporarily to all traffic for about six weeks or longer depending on what is found by the crews, he said. “People can still get around and this cave will essentially be closed off permanently, we’re just not sure how it will appear when the project is completed,” he said. “People however can still get around and see the beautiful La Jolla caves.” Other Sunny Jim Folklore According to more folklore, some stories suggest the cave was initially called “Sunny Jim” by Frank Baum, the author of “The Wizard of Oz.” Why? Because looking outward from the inside of the cave, the opening profile resembles the cartoon mascot for British Force Wheat Cereal (named Sunny Jim) created by W.W. Denslow in the 1920s. There are other rumors and tales suggesting the cavern was named after former California Gov. “Sunny Jim” Rolph. A third tales says it is named so because its opening resembles a smiling (sunny) man (named Jim for an unknown reason) facing leftward.Like Sunny Jim the other six caves have their own story and history, which will be explored in upcoming articles.

The City of San Diego announced the beginning of an emergency construction project to stabilize a cliff area and roadway in La Jolla following an analysis by geology experts.

Experts reportedly discovered a zone of weakness on a local sea cave called Cook’s Crack that's located underneath Coast Boulevard and recommended action be taken. The City immediately shut down the street Thursday evening and initiated an emergency contract to reinforce the cave.

As part of the stabilization project, sections of Cave Street and Coast Boulevard will be closed temporarily to all traffic for about six weeks while the work is completed. All efforts will be made to accommodate access for nearby residents and businesses in some fashion.

San Diego Humane Society’s Kitten Nursery is caring for a cat who gave birth to 11 kittens. This is rare, as the average litter size for cats is three to five kittens. Even more unusual, the cat has 11 nipples – one for each kitten. On average, cats have six to eight nipples and they almost always have an even number. “A healthy litter this size is incredibly uncommon and certainly not something we see every day in the nursery,” said Jackie Noble, kitten nursery manager. The mother and her kittens were discovered by a good Samaritan inside a dumpster in downtown San Diego. The finder said it did not look like someone had dumped the animals there, but rather the mother thought it was a safe place to hide and take care of her babies. The cat and kittens are all in good health. They are receiving care at SDHS’s Kitten Nursery, where they will stay until the kittens are ready for adoption and the mother can be spayed. As cute as the kittens are, a litter this large highlights the importance of spaying and neutering. It is critical for the community to work together to spay and neuter community cats. Cats can get pregnant about every three months, so it’s possible for a single cat to have more than 200 kittens in her lifetime. Community cats can be altered through trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs. Community cats are trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated and ear-tipped for identification. After recovering, they are returned outdoors to live their lives without having any more kittens. SDHS offers free spay/neuter, vaccinations and ear-tipping for community cats at each of our three campuses. Learn more about community cats and TNR at sdhumane.org/services/community-cats/. International Cat Day is Thursday, Aug. 8.

Getting a cure for HIV is a powerful concept, often spoken of as the Holy Grail of HIV research. Although effective anti-HIV drugs have transformed HIV into a chronic manageable condition – a condition you live with, rather than die from – taking life-long therapy is a very different proposition to being definitively cured.

I put it to the whole human race that there is an affordable, scalable HIV cure that worked as well as would put the global eradication of new HIV infections within reach, while also transforming the lives of those now living with the virus.

Given the effectiveness of this drug in both treating and preventing HIV infection, I will say to everyone reading this, that i am a living witness to it. Unlike fraudsters and online scammers who will play you and leave you frustrated with lose of money and hope, this drug cost less and it is worth a try.

If you are interested in getting cured of your own illness,

Below is the communication link of the doctor who has the new medicine which i took that got me cure.

Its a pleasure for me to write this testimony about how i got my Genital Herpes cured a month ago. i have been reading so many comments of some people who were cured from various diseases by Dr. Edes, but i never believed them. I was hurt and depressed, I was too curious and wanted to try Dr.Edes, then i contacted him through his email (dredeshome@gmail.com) when i contact him, he assured me 100% that he will heal me, i pleaded with him to help me out. My treatment was a great success, he healed me just as he promised. He sent me his medication and ask me to go for check up after 14 days of taking the medication. i agreed with him and i took his medication and went for check up, to my greatest surprise my result was negative after the treatment, i am really happy that i am cured and healthy again. I have waited for 3weeks to be very sure i was completely healed before writing this testimony. I did another blood test one week ago and it was still Herpes negative. so i guess its time i recommend anyone going through Herpes HSV-1 or HSV-2, HIV, HPV, Hepatitis B, Diabetes, Cancer should reach him through his Email dredeshome@gmail.com OR add him on whatsapp 2348151937428.

The BSU (Mission Bay), Central (Pacific Beach-Mission Beach), Northern (La Jolla) and Southern (Ocean Beach) lifeguard teams displayed their athleticism, tenacity and dedication to the profession of surf lifesaving by putting on a great show for the observing crowd on Thursday, Aug. 1 at South Mission Beach. The Southern and Northern teams went head-to-head for the first four events with Southern landline swimmer Gabby Thomas plus the landline team inching out Northern to the beach and with round trip swimmers Tore Blichtfelt and Greg Nelsen holding off the Northern swimmers during their allotted swim legs. The momentum swing occurred during the first distance paddle when Northern’s Tristan Sullaway (the evening’s MVP), put 15 seconds between himself and the paddler from Southern. Northern took it from there. The Northern team captain, Kyle Gantz, accepted the relay trophy, which they will host until next summer, and also presented the coveted “relay mugs” to his winning team.

La Jolla wildlife drone photographer Domenic Biagini recently announced to his 26,000-plus Instagram followers that he is starting his own whale watching company on Labor Day weekend. After spending the past two years capturing incredible photos and videos of humpbacks, fin and minke whales for San Diego Whale Watch, Biagini is setting sail on his own with Gone Whale Watching.

Rather than the larger tours most local companies give, Biagini said he wanted to focus on the smaller crowd (five people max) so he could provide a unique and intimate experience with some of San Diego’s most majestic underwater creatures.

What I really want to focus on is the customer experience here, and also how to get the most beautiful images of these animals” said Biagini. “What's the most respectful way to approach them? How do we go about making sure that it’s not only that the passenger that gets the best experience? How do we do it in a way that is sustainable and eco-friendly to the marine life?”

Biagini will take out his Gone Whale Watching tours daily for two to three hours and will be offering special workshops on drone photography and other long-range trips — like the ones he usually takes on his own. Everything from spontaneous trips to catch a rare orca sighting to staying out a little longer because a pod of dolphins decided to put on a show is possible with Biagini.

Last week I went out to San Clemente Island and that's 65 miles from Mission Bay,” he said. “A typical tour here doesn't go much further than 10 to 12 miles. But when you extend out to such a different part of the ocean, you come across things that you don't see in the near coastal waters.”

Like the rare and exotic Bryde’s whale that he witnessed lunging out of the water into a school of tuna fish.

To get offshore and see things like that is a really special feeling. It's really unique. And now I'm gonna be offering all different kinds of unique trips like that.”

Another unique addition Biagini is bringing to the whale watching business is his personal photography skills. Every tour comes with all the wildlife photography he takes as well as one drone photo of the tour participants (with hopefully a breaching whale in the background).

His boat is also not the usual whale watching vessel. His Key West Cuddy Cabin is a style that’s more for offshore fishing, making it less of a “wet ride” like the inflatable boats typically used. Participants can also enjoy the “Dolphin Seat,” a spot right in front of the bow that gets you so close to the water that you’re “just almost touching dolphins."

While Gone Whale Watching may have come as a surprise to some, it's been Biagini’s plan all along.

This is something I kind of had my eyes set on from the moment I got into this industry,” he said. “There's just something about being on a boat full of people who have never seen what I see every day and get to share that experience with them firsthand. It's just really an incredibly fulfilling feeling.

I knew that I always wanted to be able to do this my way, and show people basically what I do when I take my own personal boat out every day. It really is a dream come true."

Gone Whale Watching will set sail on its first tour on Friday, Aug. 30. Tickets are $80 per person and can be purchased by visiting gonewhalewatching.com.
