La Jolla's Joseph Bellows Gallery likes to show off uniquely American photography – and since air travel pretty much started in the U.S., the venue thought that the work of Josef Hoflehner might be fair game. The Austria-born photographer is best known for his landscape images and entries from his Jet Airliner Project, like the close call pictured (Hoflehner and his son Jakob spent many years taking images of low-flaying aircraft). The exhibit is part of Bellows' Summer Selections series, which this year opened June 7 and continues through July 19 with myriad images reflecting the American experience. Since its opening in 1998, the Bellows venue has become a premiere destination for devotees of American photographic art.
SUMMER COLLECTIONS: Through July 19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Sundays, at JOSEPH BELLOWS GALLERY, 7661 Girard Ave., josephbellows.com.
