San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguards are currently recruiting men and women interested in becoming a seasonal lifeguard for an upcoming tryout in January 2018. With more than 40 miles of oceanfront and shoreline to patrol throughout the city, and an average of 17 million visitors to local beaches each year, seasonal lifeguards are used to supplement year-round staffing during the summer.

“Our lifeguards performed more than 7,800 rescues just this year, so we always have to be physically and mentally ready to respond to an emergency at any time,” said SDFD Lifeguard Sgt. Michael Neal. “For those who can meet the demands of the job and become a lifeguard, I guarantee they will never have a more rewarding or unique job experience.”

In advance of the official tryouts on Jan. 4, 5 and 6, a practice tryout is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at Ventura Cove, 1000 West Mission Bay Drive, to help applicants prepare. The practice tryout will be very similar to what applicants can expect at the January tryout where they’ll be asked to complete a 500-meter swim in under 10 minutes. Those interested in trying out at the official January tryout are strongly encouraged to attend the practice tryout.
