San Diego Humane Society presented the 35th annual Fur Ball Gala on Oct. 2. Dogs and their companions arrived on the red carpet in their best evening wear. Dagmar Midcap, the weather anchor for KNSD-TV, was emcee for this event. The evening started with a sit-down vegetarian dinner and wine selections prepared by chef Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse Grille.

The event held raffle drawings and a live auction to help raise money. This year, they raised more than $1 million toward the vital services this nonprofit will provide to more than 40,000 animals this year. During the dinner, San Diego Humane Society was presented the ‘Nonprofit of the Year’ award by Assemblymember Brian Malenschein. This dog-friendly event culminated in an after-party with live music by Haute Chile.

The San Diego Humane Society has been around since 1980 with campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, Ramona, and San Diego. Besides adopting animals, they offer an array of programs such as strengthening the human bond, preventing cruelty and neglect, and provide medical care. They also educate the community and serve as a safety net for all pet families. If you missed this annual event, stay tuned to sdhumane.org.

FWSD hits the runway

Fashion Week San Diego 2021 hit the runway running on Oct. 2. Guests had a choice of attending the event or watching it live on the internet. Ten female designers presented their creations this year. The event was held at U4RIK Spirits and they provided signature drinks for all the guests.

First Place Top Designer this year went to Sierra Mitchell who is no stranger to FWSD. Mitchell created the winning collection by combining her skill as a technical designer with hand-cut fabrics and sewing techniques for these amazing designs.

Second Place Top Designer went to Calah Olson of Outsiders Clothing. This is an alternative clothing brand where rejects and misfits of society are celebrated. Third Place Top Designer went to Eiona. This brand was created by Lashonza Featherston. She brings healing and therapy to her fashion by using crystals and meditation in designing her collection.

Bea Cruz PH is a designer from the Philippines who was voted the Top Designer last year at FWSD. This year, Ashley Nell Tipton, winner of “Project Runway” season 14 gave out a new award (Ashley Nell Tipton Award) to Bea Cruz.

Awards were also given to models in the fashion show: First Place Top Model: Sydney Hamm; Second Place Top Model: Denzel Zeigler; and Third Place Top Model: Madison Vice. For upcoming events about the FWSD, visit fashionweeksd.com.
