San Diego Wave internationals Alex Morgan, Naomi Girma, Jaedyn Shaw (above), and Kailen Sheridan will square off against each other in the upcoming Women’s Gold Cup semifinal at Snapdragon Stadium on Wednesday, March 6 in hopes of lifting the trophy for their respective country.
Morgan has already scored twice during the tournament after replacing forward Mia Fishel due to injury while Shaw has scored three times with the most recent coming to close out the 3-0 victory over Colombia in the quarterfinal on March 3. As for Girma, the 2023 NWSL defender of the year and U.S. Soccer female player of the year has been a reliable and reassuring force in the back for the U.S. during the four matches so far.
The three SD Wave standouts will see a familiar face on the opposite side of the pitch in teammate goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan who has not conceded a goal the entire tournament all while Canada has outscored its opponents 14-0. The last time the two sides met was on Feb. 16, 2023, in the opening round of the SheBelieves Cup with the USWNT coming out on top 2-0. Canada and U.S. also faced each other in the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Championship final with Morgan scoring the game-winner on a penalty kick conversion in the 78th minute.
Whichever team comes out victorious will take on the winner of Brazil vs Mexico from the other semifinal with the possibility of a rivalry rematch between USA and El Tri femenil for the championship after “Las Aztecas” came out on top 2-0 on Feb. 26.
Regardless of which San Diego Wave players come out on top in the Women’s Gold Cup, they will be in good form for the NWSL Challenge Cup final on March 15 versus Gotham FC and the regular season opener against the Kansas City Current at Snapdragon Stadium on March 23.
