One of the best breakfast spots in town is gone.
Perry’s Cafe at 4620 Pacific Highway in Midway District near Old Town flipped its last omelet and served its final frittata, one of its signature dishes, on Sunday, Aug. 4.
The restaurant’s owner, Perry Eulmi, and the Georgakopoulos clan have sold the site to a housing developer and are retiring from their family business after 39 years. The cafe had been open since March 1985.
The property was sold to Viewpoint Development, which reportedly plans to build over 200 apartment units in a seven-story structure onsite for moderate- and low-income tenants. The site is in escrow and is expected to close later this month.
The cafe was originally going to close on Aug. 15. But a farewell note posted on the cafe’s front door explained why the end came sooner. “We love you. Your support and kindness since we announced our closing has been very humbling and overwhelming,” states the note.
“Unfortunately, the increased volume of business has taken a toll on the health of our staff and we are forced to close sooner than planned. There are not enough words to express our gratitude to each and every one of you for the many years of love you have bestowed upon us. – With great appreciation, Perry Eulmi and staff.”
The restaurant was founded by Greek immigrants Constantine “Costas” and Margaret Georgakopoulos and was named for their daughter Perry Eulmi, who intends to retire in Carlsbad. Eulmi pointed out that the new owners would be obligated to preserve parts of the building during their redevelopment because it had been designated historic, thus meriting protection.
