ROMAN DE SALVO’S “MCCAIRN” MURAL INSTALLED BY MURALS OF LA JOLLA

A mural by Roman de Salvo’s mural is now located above a BMW repair shop on La Jolla Boulevard in the Bird Rock. The mural, titled “McCairn,” is a juxtaposition of antiquity and modernity perched above the building on a two-sided site that is reminiscent of a billboard surface. “McCairn” playfully recalls the original commercial purpose of such a sign with the iconic double arches of the McDonald’s logo re-imagined through carefully stacked stones.

Murals of La Jolla, a project of the Athenaeum, demonstrates that commissioning artists to create works for public spaces brings energy and vitality to a community. For more information, visit www.ljathenaeum.org or www.muralsoflajolla.com.

FREE WATERCOLOR CLASS HELD AT LAWRENCE FAMILY JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER

A free watercolor painting class will be held every Tuesday starting April 2 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center,

4126 Executive Drive. The class will run until June 4. There is no charge to attend the classes and no prior experience is required. Classes will be hosted by Plein air artist Sharon Hinckley.

NOVELIST NATHAN ENGLANDER TO VISIT JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER

Novelist Nathan Englander will be making a book tour stop at the Garfield Theatre in the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla Friday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. to promote “Kaddish.com: A Novel” and host a discussion alongside the artistic director of The Old Globe, Barry Edelstein.

Join the Pulitzer finalist for Shabbat dinner and conversation about his new book. The brilliant, streamlined comic novel is about a son’s failure to say Kaddish for his father and his subsequent hiring of a stranger through a website called kaddish.com to recite the daily prayer and shepherd his father’s soul safely to rest.

Tickets are $62 and include Shabbat dinner and one signed copy of Englander’s book. Cost for just the dinner and conversation is $45. Visit my.lfjcc.org for tickets.

THE LODGE IN TORREY PINES KICKING OFF “PLAYING WITH FIRE” CULINARY CHEF SERIES
