Allen Field sustains vandalism damage
Deep tire marks in the shape of large circles were discovered Wednesday, July 26, at Allen Field on North Torrey Pines Road ” an act of vandalism causing $1,000 worth of damage to a soccer venue that was scheduled as a practice site beginning July 28.
The San Diego Police Department’s Northern Division is investigating the incident but has no leads at this time, according to Lt. Brian Ahearn.
“I was just sickened by the amount of damage done and by what motivation someone would have to do something like this,” Ahearn said. “It upset a lot of people in the community because there was really no need for this to happen.”
It is unclear at this time whether the vandalism was committed by a disgruntled neighbor or an individual who has unresolved issues with the soccer clubs that use Allen Field or whether it was a random act, Ahearn said. Police were sent several photos of the damage, but when officers went to the scene on Friday, July 27, to take more photos, the vandalism had already been repaired by members of La Jolla Youth Soccer Inc. and the Nomads Soccer League, according to Ahearn.
The two groups take turns using Allen Field for soccer practices and games and had set this past Saturday as the start of the regularly scheduled season, Ahearn said. Phone calls to the Nomads and La Jolla Youth Soccer were not immediately returned.
Police are still questioning nearby residents and searching for witnesses to the crime. Those who may have information are asked call Northern Division, (858) 552-1700.

Unified District sets up enrollment center
The San Diego Unified School District has set up a one-stop enrollment center for all new and transferring San Diego students and preschoolers.
Located at Roosevelt Middle School, 3366 Park Blvd., next to the San Diego Zoo, parents can enroll their children Monday through Wednesday until Aug. 8 and Monday through Friday from Aug. 13 through 24. The center is open from noon to 7 p.m. The center will also be open Saturday, Aug. 25, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Students must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. A copy of a birth certificate and proof of residency must be provided. Proof of immunization varies depending on age.
For information, visit www.sandi.net or call (619) 725-5672.

ACS schedules cancer forum
The American Cancer Society will host a community forum, “Access to Care Community,” on Friday, Aug. 3, to inform the public about issues that might emerge when loved ones are diagnosed with cancer.
The forum begins with lunch at 11 a.m., followed by the program at 11:30.
The forum will focus on community leaders and cancer patients. The American Cancer Society hopes to highlight that winning the fight against cancer is dependent on the expansion of access to quality care.
“We will have cancer survivors and caregivers who talk about their experiences,” said Lynda Barbour, ACS health promotions director.
During a panel discussion, experts will address current healthcare reform issues.
People interested in participating can register by calling (619) 682-7475.
The forum will take place at the Starboard Room at the Marina Village Conference Center, 1930 Quivera Road.

Weekend Movies by the Sea light Scripps Park
La Jolla residents who want to enjoy a summer evening with their families are invited to attend Movies by the Sea at La Jolla Cove’s Ellen Browning Scripps Park. The two-day outdoor film series, hosted by La Jolla Parks and Recreation and Promote La Jolla, is Friday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 5. Movies will be projected onto a 35-by-40-foot inflatable screen adjacent to the park’s large lawn.
“I love outdoor movies, and there is hardly any park that is more suitable for outdoor movies than Ellen Browning Scripps Park,” said Hobe Schroeder, the event organizer for the La Jolla Parks and Rec. Attendees, he added, can sit “directly on the water, watching the sunset and waiting until dark to start the movie.”
Schroeder, who first suggested the outdoor movie concept to La Jolla Parks and Rec in 2003, said he was inspired by his nostalgia for the Cove Theatre, the single-screen movie theater formerly located on Girard Avenue in the Village of La Jolla.
In addition to the movie screenings, the Latin-folk band Tinku will serenade attendees on Friday, and the Monarch School steel drum band performs on Sunday.
Schroeder recommended that attendees bring low lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic to the event.
Movies by the Sea will screen “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” on Friday, Aug. 3 and “March of the Penguins” on Sunday, Aug. 5 after sunset.
Pre-show performances will begin at 7 p.m. For information, call (858) 454-5855.
