For decades, librarians have been the gatekeepers of the code of silence in public libraries, often using signage and occasionally a curt “shushing” sound to enforce this rule.
In the Hervey/Point Loma Branch Library, however, the golden rule of silence is not as closely observed on Mondays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Library patrons who listen closely may hear singing.
On Monday, Sept. 10, the Peninsula Singers will open its fall rehearsal season at the Point Loma/Hervey Family Library. The group consists of members of all ages “15 to 85 and beyond.
The chorus was founded several years ago by Point Loma residents Judy and Richard Eby, who recognized the need for a community chorus.
The chorus has continued to grow and is committed to enrich, educate and entertain diverse audiences in the region and to build arts awareness through community connections.
“We believe we are the only group who rehearses in a library,” stated Sarah Suhonen, artistic director for the group, “and we are most appreciative of our beautiful rehearsal room here in the Point Loma/Hervey Family Library.”
Suhonen joined the group three years ago, first as a singer, and then quickly transitioned to her present role. Stewart Simon is the accompanist.
The musical repertoire of this group is rich and varied, and highlights a range of styles.
Suhonen, who has an extensive singing background, teaches private lessons for both children and adults and also instructs at the Point Loma High School while maintaining her busy schedule of singing performances throughout the United States.
The rehearsals are held every Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. from September to June, reflecting the school calendar. In addition, music classes are often held at 5 p.m. Mondays, just prior to rehearsals, and cover everything from basic music reading lessons through vocal techniques and music appreciation.
