Snorkeling in La Jolla Shores has been on my list of to-dos since I moved to California two months ago. La Jolla Kayak provides you with everything you need to get the most out of the snorkeling experience. You’ll get a full set of gear with fitted fins, a mask and a wetsuit if you would like one. I was guided around the cove by our tour guide, Nikky. The staff will take you out on kayaks from the La Jolla Shores beach and anchor up right off the caves. We got geared up and hopped right in the water, where I caught my first glimpse of crystal-clear water and slithering sea creatures. Nikky took us around the caves, and then we swam around the corner to see inside the clam cave. We were then taken right next to the sea lions, where Nikky pointed out underwater tunnels, spectacular rock formations and amazing marine life at the bottom of the sea. There were schools of bright Garibaldi fish that swam comfortably with us, as if we were one of them. I was surprised that the sea lions were so comfortable with people swimming around and watching them from a distance.
Nikky then showed us the rose canyon fault line, gave us a brief history how the caves were formed and related stories of interesting local legends. We returned our gear and spent the rest of the afternoon laying in the sun on a flat section of the cliffs. La Jolla Kayak offers a variety of snorkel, kayak and cave tours every day of the week.
