Little league to host opening day and other UC news

University City Little League will hold their opening day festivities on Saturday, Feb. 29, starting at 9 a.m. UCLL expects a very exciting season as they have signed up the most players in the T-ball and MAPS division in more than a decade. Opening day will take a note from some other fun UC events like the 4th of July and Oktoberfest by making the event open for the whole community, not just the players. Plans include a rock wall, jumpers, fastest pitch in the West, a band playing baseball tunes and, best of all, a brand-new slushie machine for the snack bar. Food will be served all day including carne asada tacos, nachos and other yummy treats.

The goal is to make opening day another staple in the community where people of all ages, with or without kids, can come enjoy the event, which has been a part of the UC community for decades. Opening day will be at the baseball fields next to Swanson Pool, 3585 Governor Drive. Bring the entire family, some chairs and enjoy a game or two. Watching the T-ball games will definitely bring a smile to your face. Info at ucll.org.

CALIFORNIA COAST CREDIT UNION

California Coast Credit Union recently opened a new branch in the Sprouts Marketplace, 3202 Governor Drive (Governor and Regents), and they will be holding their grand opening celebration on Saturday, Feb. 29, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be food, music, and prizes, including: Disneyland tickets, San Diego Zoo tickets, concert tickets, San Diego Gulls VIP tickets, and more. Plus, you can have a chance to grab cash in the Cash Cube! The new UC location holds a special place for Todd Lane, CEO of Cal Coast CU, as he grew up in the UC community. And those who have been using the Cal Coast ATM located in the same parking lot, don’t worry – Lane’s former neighbors have “encouraged” him to keep it open. Info at calcoastcu.org.

‘MATILDA’

Local youth continues to entertain the community with their latest show “Matilda.” The international Tony Award-winning smash musical hit was inspired by Roald Dahl. “Matilda” tells the story of a girl who learns to believe in herself, despite having unloving parents. It’s a story of empowerment told from the perspective of kids. And this JCompany production includes a cast of more than 80 young artists, featuring beautiful music and stunning choreography. The show runs from March 6 to 22, at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre, Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, 4126 Executive Drive. Get tickets at 858-362-1348 or sdcjc.org/jc/. Tickets are $18, students are JCC members are $16. Special promo code is HONEY2020 to get $3 off regularly priced tickets, available online only.

PARTY WITH A PURPOSE

Curie Elementary PTA will hold their sixth annual Curie Party with a Purpose on Friday, March 6, 6-8 p.m., at AleSmith Brewery Company (upstairs), located at 9990 AleSmith Court, San Diego, 92126. The annual fundraising event will have live music, and a live auction. The party is a casual event and attendees must be 21 and over. Tickets include dinner (vegetarian option available) and beverage. Tickets are $30 each through Feb. 29, $35 each afterwards. The community is also encouraged to donate a teacher/staff ticket for $20. Tickets and info, including an online auction, available at curiepta.org.

SCOTT PETERS

As a follow-up to the Aviation 2020 meeting organized by the University City Community Association, Congressman Scott Peters, representing the 52nd District, issued the following statement to the University City community:

“Thank you for inviting Jessica Brown from my office to attend this important event. I have been, and continue to be, concerned for the safety and quality of life of all residents of University City. As you know, I have met with members of the community, the FAA, and MCAS Miramar leadership to facilitate open communication on this issue.

“Earlier [in January], at my request, Colonel Dockery, the commanding officer of MCAS Miramar, briefed me in my office on recent MCAS Miramar operations and the integration of the F-35. I asked that he ensure pilots, whether stationed at Miramar or visiting from other bases, are briefed on and adhere to aviation course rules, and he reaffirmed his commitment to doing so. I will also meet with TRACON [Air Traffic Control; provides Terminal Radar Air Traffic Approach Control] for an update. I will continue to communicate with the FAA and the Marines to ensure that aviation safety is always a priority as they complete their national security objectives. Thank you for your continued engagement as a community.”
