Led by San Diego Youth Science teachers Danielle Adler and Stacy Circuit, students learned about the marine habitat and then worked in groups to record their observations. “When designing programs at San Diego Youth Science our main goal is to make the science relevant and interesting to our students,” Adler said. “We strive to inspire scientific thinking about the world through hands-on, student driven experimentation and engagement in the process of science.” All grades at PBE have been working with SDYS over the past two months exploring beach habitats, from the sandy beach and wrack habitat to the kelp forest and tide pools. The program is culminating with field trips to Tourmaline Beach where students explore and conduct transect studies examining species abundance and diversity.

– The PBE Variety Show, a tradition for more than 20 years, will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 9. The show is an opportunity for kids to show off their talents, from singing and dancing to telling jokes and performing magic tricks. Barnard Elementary – The Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary School Performing Arts Group made its debut during this year’s Chinese New Year holiday. The troupe, made up of 23 first through fifth grade students, performed at five venues in San Diego throughout the 2018 Chinese New Year season, including the House of China in Balboa Park, Sea World, and Downtown San Diego.
The group was formed in September 2017 by students interested in combining their Mandarin immersion education with a formal study of Chinese cultural arts. Under the direction of teachers from the Confucius Institute at San Diego State University and Blue Ming Dance Group, the performers study speech, song, dance and martial arts two days after school each week. The students interpreted the famous story of “Mulan,” a Chinese girl who disguises herself as a man in order to train as a fierce warrior. Their performance included recitation of ancient Chinese poetry, martial arts-inspired dance, and Chinese song.
“It feels great to do this, because other people can see all our hard work and all we have learned,” said Ema R., a second-grade student at Barnard, who performs both speech and dance with the troupe. “I am especially happy to perform ‘Mulan,’ because she is brave and I am also brave.”
Now that the Year of the Dog is well underway and the new year festivities have died down, the group will begin learning a new program. Mark your calendars – their new act will be introduced at the Moon Festival at the Organ Pavilion in September. Kate Sessions – Kate Sessions Elementary, an International Baccalaureate World school, offers programs that develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. One of these programs is “I See IB.” Those who are being recognized for their IB attitudes this month are: Mia Leahy, Lily Caparatta, Kendall Lewis and Lauren Lowary for caring, Logan Haw for showing respect and Everly Syz for her empathy.  – The Kate Sessions Spring Fling auction party will take place on Friday, March 16 at Marina Village. It will be a night of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with raffle baskets, gambling tables, dancing, a live auction, and merriment. For ticket information, contact [email protected]. The Online Auction will be starting on April 9. The school is looking for donations from local businesses, To donate, contact [email protected]. FOPBSS – Taste of North PB Restaurant Walk, will take place 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 14. Join the community for a restaurant walk through North PB featuring a variety of delicious food from 20 restaurants and cafes. Enjoy music from local musicians and schools, and displays of student art.  Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children, and available at MBHS, PBMS, PBE, Leilani’s Cafe, Pernicano’s Pizza House, and Java Earth Cafe. All proceeds benefit Friends of Pacific Beach Secondary Schools to help fund school programs.
