The United States Tennis Association’s National Hard Court Championships will take place Dec. 2-8 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, 2000 Spindrift Dr., one of California’s most treasured beachfront resorts for over 75 years.
Tournament competition is slated for men and women in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events for players 40 and over (players must reach or exceed the age of 40 at any time in this calendar year to be eligible). Participants will include former touring pros and the nation’s strongest players in this age group.
The seven-day event at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club will feature both singles and doubles matches starting on Monday, Dec. 2. Tournament matches are scheduled each day of the week, with the finals scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 8.
Also on the agenda is the USTA National Father/Son and Grandfather/Grandson Hard Court Doubles Championships beginning Friday, December 6, with matches concluding Sunday, Dec. 8. The Father/Son championship has been held continuously at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club since 1959 and attracts the top father and son tennis teams in the nation. The Grandfather/Grandson Championship is a relatively new competitive division that started at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in 2003. Draws will be posted at the Beach Club and will be available via LJBTC.com.
Schedules and match times for individual events will depend on the number of entries in each event. Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles are expected to start on Monday. Mixed doubles are expected to start on Tuesday. Father/Son and Grandfather/Grandson Doubles are expected to play their first matches early Friday morning.
La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club welcomes tennis spectators to the tournament with free admission. Onsite parking is available for a nominal fee.
The sixth annual 10U Green-dot Father/Son tournament will also be played during the final weekend. This special event is for fathers and sons who are not quite ready to compete in the Open Father/Son division. Fathers and a young son (10 & under), are eligible to play in the non-sanctioned event. The emphasis will be on fun and the event is aimed to help kids get ready to play the main event in the future.
Those interested in entering the Green-dot event should contact Conan Lorenzo at 619-846-3094 or [email protected]. The matches will be played with green dot balls. Match formats will be round robin scoring using short sets. Play in this special event is expected to start in the afternoon on Saturday, Dec. 7.
