U.S. Border Patrol agents, police and other law enforcement authorities descended on a panga boat that attempted to set ground at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach around 1:30 a.m. April 16. Federal agents arrested roughly a dozen or so undocumented immigrants, although several others reportedly escaped the law enforcement dragnet. Witnesses reported seeing some of the illegal immigrants fleeing down Newport and Santa Monica avenues, dumping life vests in the process. Federal officials said the search is continuing for some of the boat’s occupants and that two of those on board have been identified as human smugglers.
