Cynthia Hedgecock, the wife of former mayor and local conservative talk show host Roger Hedgecock, is suing the city over an incident in July 2015.
In a lawsuit filed in October 2016, Hedgecock said she ruptured her silicone breast implants after tripping and falling over a public sidewalk crack in Pacific Beach. Her suit claims her ruptured implants leaked silicone into her bloodstream requiring her to undergo “grueling” replacement surgery.
The Hedgecock’s suit contends the city was negligent by not repairing a concrete lip on a public sidewalk caused by a tree that raised a portion of the sidewalk on Morrell Street near Grand Avenue on July 31, 2015. The couple said damages they suffered exceeded $25,000.
A party to his wife’s lawsuit, Roger Hedgecock, said he suffered “the loss of support, service, love, companionship, society, affection, relations and solace from his wife,” according to court documents.
Cindy Hedgecock said she needed weeks to recover after her replacement surgery, during which time she used pain medication, sleep aides and required her husband’s constant assistance, according to her suit.
Hedgecock was mayor of San Diego in the mid-’80s. In 1985, he was charged with several felonies related to receiving more than $350,000 in illegal campaign funds and was forced from office because of the scandal.
Hedgecock’s first trial ended in a mistrial by to a hung jury after the jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction. Ultimately, in November 1990, Hedgecock reached a deal with prosecutors in which he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy in return for no jail time or retrial. As part of the deal, a judge reduced the felony to a misdemeanor and dismissed the case.
