Eight projects slated for UCSD campus this year Eight projects will be completed on UCSD’s campus in 2011, said Anu Delouri, representative for UCSD’s Physical and Community Planning Office. The Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI) and East Campus Recreation Area (ECRA) projects are currently under environmental review, and the Marine Ecosystem Sensing, Observation, and Modeling (MESOM) Laboratory and Central Research Services Facility/George Palade Laboratory Expansion (CRSF/GPLE) projects are pending final approval by UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. A community information and Environmental Impact Report (EIR) scoping meeting for the CTRI and ECRA projects will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 16th at the UCSD campus in the University Center, Administrative Complex, Room 111A. Long-time LJCPA committee member dies LJCPA trustee Joe LaCava announced the recent death of George Sutton, a 45-year member of the LJCPA’s Traffic and Transportation Board. “He was a mainstay in the community, but out of the limelight,” LaCava said. “This is a huge loss to the Bird Rock community,” he said, adding that he was the “nicest, classiest guy you’ll ever meet.” Appointment of DPR Chairman postponed A motion to postpone the appointment of Paul Benton as Chairman of the Development Permit Review (DPR) committee was passed. A LJCPA ordinance mandates that a member must attend at least three meetings prior to chairing a committee. The DPR will be chaired by President Pro Tem, Laura Ducharme-Conboy, until Benton qualifies to run for DPR Chair. Sewer pipeline rehabilitation project takes place this fall More than six miles of pipes in La Jolla will undergo rehabilitation beginning this fall, said Maryam Liagham, representative for the City of San Diego Capital Projects. “The City of San Diego is required to replace pipes and sewer lines that are corroded, over-pressured, and have backflow problems,” she said. No traffic issues are anticipated and no open trenching will be involved in the procedure, which involves lining the pipes with resin to prolong its life another 40 years. Construction, including rehabilitating manholes, will take approximately one year of construction, she said. LJCPA opposes Children’s Pool beach closure Don Daneri, representative from the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation, presented the City’s plan to close the Children’s Pool beach during pupping season for seals. Fourteen members of the La Jolla community—including divers, parents, and other beachgoers—spoke in opposition to the City’s proposal. The LJCPA motioned to oppose annually closing public access to the La Jolla Children’s Pool citing that “complete public access to the Children’s Pool should remain open year-round in perpetuity”. The planning association also motioned to recommend that Parks and Recreation and other planning commissions not pursue initiation of the proposed Community Plan Amendment that would close the Children’s Pool beach. – The Aron Residence was approved by a city Hearing Officer on June 1 – Katherine Miles will replace Thyme Curtis as Councilmember Kevin Faulconer’s LJCPA representative for Mount Soledad – Applicants for the Palazzo condominium development project considered modifications to the project and postponed their City Council appeal hearing until September 2011 – Greg Salmon was removed as a LJCPA trustee due to missing four meetings – Bob Collins, Joe LaCava, and Tim Lucas volunteered to form a Special Election Committee – LJCPA approved the Trunkey Residence slope repair on environmentally sensitive lands and Taste of the Cove street closures on Coast Blvd. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. – The LJCPA voted to approve a request to extend 2 hour parking to the 8600 and 8700 blocks of Nottingham Dr.
