City Council 2007 committees OKed
The 2007 San Diego City Council committee assignments, which were proposed by Council President and District 1 Councilman Scott Peters, were unanimously approved by council members on Tuesday, Nov. 29, according to Pam Hardy, communications director for Peters’ office.
Two assignment changes were the naming of District 8 Councilman Ben Hueso as vice chairperson of the Committee on Land Use and Housing, and of District 2 Councilman Kevin Faulconer as vice chairperson for the Committee on Budget and Finance, Hardy said.
District 4 Councilman Tony Young will continue to serve as Council President Pro Tem, acting as president and as council chair in the absence of Peters.
In addition, city councilmembers who won the primary election in June will be sworn into office Monday, Dec. 4, at the council’s inauguration ceremony.
Newly elected officials include Kevin Faulconer (District 2), Donna Frye (District 6), Ben Hueso (District 8) and Tony Young (District 4).
The members are expected to give brief statements following their oaths and a reception will be held immediately after in the Golden Hall Lobby at City Hall.
CPA resident membership requirement reduced
The La Jolla Community Planning Association’s (LJCPA) bylaw subcommittee voted Thursday, Nov. 16, to change the resident membership requirement for meeting attendance from two meetings to one meeting per calendar year, according to Lance Peto, LJCPA chair.
The LJCPA’s bylaws have been under close scrutiny since the association’s October meeting, when amendments to the document, including changes concerning membership requirements, were to be voted on. However, protests from audience members tabled the issue until after the new year.
A copy of the LJCPA bylaws that was distributed at October’s meeting states that a resident must attend at least two meetings in the previous calendar year to be considered a member of the LJCPA and to be able to cast an official vote.
Many residents in attendance at October’s meeting were concerned that the two-meeting requirement for membership was unfair, claiming they had been listed as members on the LJCPA’s Web site, but had then been removed when the bylaws had first been addressed several months earlier.
The board of trustees voted at that meeting to table the issue until after January 2007, at which point all residents who had attended meetings in the previous year could vote.
The bylaws subcommittee has held nine meetings since October to revise the document before it is voted on by the LJCPA in the near future and is then presented to the San Diego City Council for review, according to Tim Golba, LJCPA president.
World AIDS Day event to benefit orphaned children
Coco and Izzy Tihanyi, twin sisters and co-founders of Surf Diva Surf School and Boutique, are hosting a daylong shopping event on Friday, Dec. 1, to raise money for World AIDS Day.
The siblings will donate 20 percent of the day’s sales to Global Action for Children (GAC), an international charity that supports youths who have been orphaned by fatal diseases, such as AIDS, and provides them with proper healthcare, food and shelter.
The issue was brought to the sisters’ attention through recent extensive media coverage and by the company’s marketing specialist, Gina Corrie-Metcalf, according to Izzy Tihanyi.
“Since our mission is to empower the lives of women and children with surfing, we see the kids that get to come to surf camp and realize how lucky they are, and we want to help children who are just struggling to survive,” Tihanyi said by phone.
More than 14 million children in Africa have been orphaned by AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, according to Corrie-Metcalf, who added that Surf Diva wanted to do its part to help with relief funding.
“We have worked with a lot of charities before ” usually we work with environmental organizations ” and we have supported charitable events before, but it’s the first time we’ve done something for children with AIDS and HIV,” she said
The store will hold an evening event from 4 to 7 p.m., which will include food from The Shores Restaurant, drinks by Cendio, and live music by classical guitarist David de Alva (until 5:30 p.m.).
A silent auction will feature items such as a night’s stay at the Sea Lodge Hotel, as well as dinner for two at The Shores Restaurant, a Surf Diva outfit and a weekend surf lesson for two from the company.
Surf Diva also created a T-shirt for the event. It is white with a red surf diva logo that reads, “Surf for the World.” The shirts are $20 each. All proceeds from the silent auction and T-shirts will be donated to GAC.
“I think that it’s great that a small business like ours can support the orphans in Africa, because what’s going on over there is such a tragedy,” Tihanyi said. “Everyone can do a little bit and it will make a big difference.”
Surf Diva is located at 2160 Avenida de la Playa.
