The 2022 Patrick Henry High School badminton team recently defended their league championship by defeating rival Mira Mesa High School10-4 (three mixed doubles matches were no contest).
According to head coach Trustin Nguyen, it was a long awaited season as the squad slowly worked themselves back from the pandemic. With the leadership of Anthony-Hao Nguyen and Jennifer Diep (both seniors) leading the team this year, practices, games, and tournaments were very well planned and organized.
Continuing from where they left off last season being league champs and CIF champs, the Patriots went undefeated to stand atop the Western Division with a record of 12-0, earning a fourth consecutive league title and number one seed (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022).
With the likes of Diep and Anthony-Hao Nguyen being this year’s team captain, their leadership role tremendously helped put together a strong 2022 roster. Diep stepped up in a big way by making a case for herself to earn a back-to-back team MVP (female) (2021 & 2022). Her work ethic and leadership has grown vastly over the years. Anthony-Hao Nguyen, on the other hand, has shown that he deservedly be this year’s team MVP (male).
