August Events

Date:  Tuesday, August 1, 2023
Time:  5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Title:  
Homeschooling 101: Learn about Homeschool Options!

Description For parents of children entering TK-12th grade: Have you been considering homeschooling your child but aren’t sure where to start? Join a homeschooling expert who will explain the different aspects and options to consider. This program will begin with a presentation and end with Q&A.

Program will be offered twice: once on August 1 at 5 p.m. and a second time on August 2 at 1:30 p.m. No registration required.                                
Audience: For parents of children entering TK-12th grade

Date:  Tuesdays, August 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2023
Time:  4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Title:  Chess Club
Description:  
Have you always wanted to learn how to play chess or improve your skills? If you have never played before, or are just looking for someone to practice with, join us for some friendly competition! All supplies are provided. 
Audience:  Recommended for elementary school-aged children through adults.

Date:  Tuesday, August 2, 2023
Time:  1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Homeschooling 101: Learn about Homeschool Options

Title: Dance Pants Party
Location: Community Room
Description:  Recommended for toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary-school age kids, this simple dance program will feature “The Wheels on the Bus,” “Baby Shark,” and more. Families, it’s time to get your groove on!
Audience: Babies/Toddler, preschoolers, elementary school age.

Date: Thursdays, August 3, 10, 24 and 31, 2023
Time: 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.
Title: Toddler and Preschool Storytime
Location: Community Room
Description:  Recommended for ages 2-5, this storytime program includes books, songs, games, and early literacy fun!

Title:  
Summer Reading Program! Zovargo: Animal Show

Description:  Jump into the world of animals with Zovargo, and discover how every little thing we do makes a difference for our world! During this interactive program you will learn how we can help to save and speak up for those animals that don’t have a voice of their own. This show is one of several offered as part of Mission Valley Library’s summer reading program. What is the summer reading program? It’s a chance for everyone–babies through adults–to come to the library for fun programs, great reads (plus movies and music), and the chance to win books and other prizes! Title: Hooray Miss Marae: Children’s Music Program
Location: Community Room
Description: 
Miss Marae and her partner Mr. Chili Lime will play lighthearted and fun songs for your toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary aged kids. Bounce, giggle, and clap along to beat! This program will take place in lieu of our typical Dance Pants program.

Date:  Monday, August 14, 2023
Time:  4:00 p.m.
Title:  Kids Book and Craft Club
Description:  Join us the second Monday of every month for an entertaining book club where we’ll discuss a great kids book, do a related craft, and enjoy snacks. A FREE copy of the month’s book will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to those who plan to attend the club. Copies are available at Mission Valley Library.

Time:  10:30 a.m.
Title:  Preschool Storybox Storytime
Description: Join us for a Japanese storytelling tradition called kamishibai (kami = paper; shibai = theater). A storyteller stands behind a little wooden theater, also known as a storybox, and reveals a series of illustrations that tell a tale.
Audience: Recommended for ages 3-5.

Date:  Saturday, August 19, 2023
Time:  10:30 a.m-11: 15 a.m.
Title:  Summer Reading Program: 
Ralph’s World: Kids’ Concert
Description: Get ready for some incredible kids’ rock music with Ralph’s World, perfect for preschool and elementary-aged kids! This show is one of several offered as part of Mission Valley Library’s summer reading program. What is the summer reading program? It’s a chance for everyone–babies through adults–to come to the library for fun programs, great reads (plus movies and music), and the chance to win books and other prizes! Intro to Circuits Using Makey-Makey

Description: Do electronics and bananas go together? Absolutely! Using Makey Makey circuit boards, students will create fun circuits that incorporate everyday items like bananas, gummy bears, aluminum foil or bouncy balls. Students will then use their new circuitry skills to make games, music or art. This is an in-person workshop. Audience: 3rd grade to 5th grade

Time:  11:15 a.m.
Title:  Mission Valley Friends of the Library Monthly Meeting
Description: Come learn about how the Mission Valley Friends of the Library support our mission! This meeting is both in-person and on Zoom. If you would like a Zoom link so that you can participate, please email [email protected].
Audience: This event is recommended for adults. Children are welcome!

Noteworthy Puppets: A Puppet Musical

Description: Get ready for an incredible puppet musical from Noteworthy Puppets starring The Three Little Pigs! This entertaining show is perfect for ages 3+. Title:  Major Morris Photography Exhibit Closing Reception

Description: As a photographer in the 1960s, Major Morris (1921-2016) captured scenes of inner-city life and protest marches. After the Civil Rights era, he earned a master’s degree from Harvard University and became an educator, training teachers in diversity and cultural sensitivity and working as a university affirmative action officer.  Join us for the closing reception for this moving exhibit.  
Audience: This event is recommended for adults.  Children are welcome!
