College Area residents as well as local businesses and organizations recently teamed up with the CACC and the District 9 Council Office, which co-sponsored a College Area Clean Up on August 5.
The event aimed to spruce up the College Area in general and to assist with the removal of discarded trash and household items. The event was timed to occur before SDSU students move back onto campus and into our surrounding neighborhoods for the fall semester of classes, which start on Aug. 21.
The Clean Up was led by CACC President Julie Hamilton and Jefferey Nguyen, Council President Sean Elo Rivera’s 9th District representative for the College Area. The Clean Up would not have occurred without the hard work and boundless energy of Jim Schneider, Susan Grant and Troy Murphree, as well. Event volunteers ate lunch at Corbin’s Q, a College Area favorite, after the Clean Up event. Corbin (seated in top picture in black shirt), is a member of the College Area Business District and provided the perfect place to celebrate after a great day in the neighborhood.
Special thanks to the staff of F45 for the heavy lifting. Many residents also helped on the day of the event, including SDSU students. The CACC greatly appreciates the D9 Council Office, all the event sponsors, and all the volunteers who helped make the event possible.
More that 30 volunteers helped to fill three huge EDCO dumpsters with waste, one Disabled American Veterans truck with donations, and one Goodwill truck with electronics recycling.
The atmosphere was charged with positivity as everyone worked together. College Area Clean Up Day was a big success!

Alvarado Estates
By KAREN AUSTIN
The AE Social Committee planned a fun “ice-cream social” which was a great way to see neighbors and enjoy a cool treat together in the summertime. Earlier in the summer we had a golf putting tournament and next month, the Social Committee will host an outdoor movie night. While these fun activities are enjoyed by all residents, it is especially wonderful to see more and more families with children living in AE and getting connected when they attend these fun social events.
College View Estates

College View Estates residents are the best! One of our young students was challenged by her parents to raise 1/3 of the cost of her school trip to NY, so she had a bake sale. Neighbors supported her by baking treats to add to the sale and she was able to sell out her goods! Thank you to all the CVE residents!
Mesa Colony
By TROY MURPHREE and SUSAN GRANT
Janessa Goldbeck, candidate for the District 4 seat on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, was invited to a “meet and greet” at the home of Mesa Colony resident Troy Murphree on Thursday, July 27.
It was a small gathering of 15 area residents. Those who attended were pleased to chat with the candidate about her views on a variety of issues plaguing our City and County. At the top of the list was housing and homelessness. Residents wanted to know about her views on the proposed adoption of Senate Bill 10 as a strategy to create affordable housing. Concerns were expressed about the alarming disappearance of affordable single-family homes in our neighborhoods, as they are snatched up by developers and turned into multi-unit apartment complexes. While Janessa did not take a definitive stand against SB 10, she did advocate for working towards utilizing available areas within the County as well as Federal Lands to ease the pressure on the City to provide housing.
Homelessness was another key issue, as residents were interested in hearing about solutions as well as prevention. She acknowledged that a large percentage of homeless people are over 50 years of age, and that they are often evicted because they get behind in rent. Janessa said there are programs to help people stay housed and to help with expenses, but many people do not know they exist.
Janessa said she thinks that solutions will require City, County and Federal cooperation. She believes that her experience working with all three of these levels of government makes her uniquely qualified to bring them together to find solutions.
The attendees felt they learned more about the candidate and her perspectives.
