Having taken over first place and riding a three-game winning streak, the San Diego Wave will face the Kansas City Current on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium. The last time the two sides met was on May 14 at Children’s Mercy Park with the team, led by head coach Casey Stoney, coming out with a 2-0 victory.
SD Wave has managed to turn things around since its 1-1 draw with Angel City FC to close out UKG Challenge Cup play on Aug. 5 by outscoring its last three opponents 5-2 during that span.
In the most recent 1-0 victory over the Houston Dash on Sept. 3, the game-winning goal came courtesy of 18-year-old phenom Jaedyn Shaw who was recently selected to the US women’s national team roster for its September friendlies. Shaw will join Wave forward Alex Morgan and defender Naomi Girma, who both represented the United States in the FIFA Women’s World Cup until its elimination by Sweden in the knockout round via penalty kicks.
Wave forward Sofia Jakobsson, who represented the Swedish women’s national team, has been called up again for two UEFA Women’s National League matches later this month. As for the opponent on Saturday, Kansas City sits in last place of the NWSL standings with 19 points and a minus 9 goal differential, which is second worst in the league. The Current come in having been shutout in back-to-back games including a 1-0 loss on Sept. 6 to the North Carolina Courage in the semifinal round of the Challenge Cup.
San Diego Wave will have three more matches left in the regular season after Saturday including the second-place Portland Thorns, and third-place North Carolina Courage before closing out at home against Racing Louisville on Oct. 15.
