Having already secured at least a second-seed and bye in the quarterfinal round for the playoffs, San Diego Wave looks to finish on top of the NWSL standings with a win over Racing Louisville on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium.
San Diego also needs a victory by Angel City FC over the Portland Thorns to take over the top seed due to Portland’s advantage when it comes to goal differential.
The advantage that San Diego has is that Angel City is fighting for the last playoff spot and needs a win along with help from the Chicago Red Stars and Houston Dash in order to make it in as the sixth seed. If both OL Reign and Orlando Pride do not come out victorious, then Angel City will make the postseason by beating the Thorns, which means Angel City will be playing all out on Sunday.
Racing Louisville is also alive for the playoffs but its chances are slim considering it needs to beat the Wave and hope that neither Angel City, Orlando Pride, or OL Reign come out with victories in their respective matches. Racing Louisville can also get the final playoff spot if Angel City, Orlando, and OL Reign all come out draws on Sunday thanks to its current +3 goal differential contingent on defeating San Diego.
The last time the Wave and Racing Louisville faced each other was on June 9 at Lynn Family Stadium, which ended in a scoreless draw as the team, led by head coach Casey Stoney, looks for its victory ever over the team from Kentucky.
