Two men face long terms in prison after pleading guilty to killing a woman outside a La Jolla party and wounding three others in a drive-by shooting in 2019.
Nina Silver, 20, was killed while standing outside with a group at 12:30 a.m. on June 23, 2019, off Cuvier Street near Pearl Street in La Jolla.
Odyssey Sellers Carrillo, now 23, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter as well as attempted murder, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon in which he admitted to inflicting great bodily injury on two victims.
Carrillo faces 35 years in prison, said Deputy District Attorney Ted Fiorito, who added that Carrillo admitted the crime was to benefit a criminal street gang.
Malik Joshua Campbell, who turns 25 on March 16, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He admitted the crime was to benefit a criminal street gang.
Campbell faces a maximum term of 24 years in prison, said Fiorito.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Eugenia Eyherabide set sentencing for July 11. Both men remain in jail without bail.
Erick Buchanan was 19 years old when he was shot in his left jaw. His mother told La Jolla Village News that he had only been at the party for 20 minutes before being shot.
Buchanan had fractures of his upper and bottom jaw, so doctors wired his mouth shut. He could only eat liquids and soft foods, his mother said. Carrillo pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Buchanan.
The case was delayed in part by COVID-19, but both men were ordered to stand trial on all charges in a preliminary hearing in June 2021 in which 16 witnesses testified.
