A preliminary hearing in the murder of a Pacific Beach man in 2023 was re-set on April 9 for July 1 by a judge after the suspect’s attorney requested more time.
The victim, Ryan Abbott, 49, was apparently talking with Michael Lawrence Callahan, 39, at Campland on the Bay RV Resort in Pacific Beach on May 16, 2023.
Police said Callahan apparently got angry and left, but returned with a firearm and shot Abbott in the chest at 10:08 p.m. Officers found Abbott suffering from a gunshot wound near the pool area and began life-saving measures until paramedics arrived.
Abbott was rushed to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead at 10:39 p.m., according to police. Officers talked to witnesses and they found Callahan inside his motorhome at the park, located in the 2200 block of Pacific Beach Drive.
The gun believed to have been used in the slaying was located and seized, police said. They did not say what Callahan was upset about.
Callahan and his attorney appeared Tuesday before San Diego Superior Court Judge Rachel Cano. The prosecutor could not be reached for comment.
Callahan has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. He remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail.
