A June 28 preliminary hearing has been set for a woman charged with murder. The case stems from the beating death of an unsheltered man Downtown who died from a head injury eight days after an attack in March.
Ashley Ann Bonk, 28 of Chula Vista, has pleaded not guilty to killing Charles Hughes, 38, who was struck in the head in the 900 block of 4th Avenue on March 21 Downtown and was taken to a hospital. Someone called 911 to report the assault.
Hughes’ condition did not improve and he died on March 29, according to San Diego Police. Bonk was arrested on April 8 in the 1200 block of Park Boulevard.
Police also arrested a 17-year-old girl on April 10 in the 1100 block of C Steet on murder charges, but her name is not public record because she is a minor and her case is being handled in Juvenile Court.
San Diego Superior Court Judge John Pro ruled that Bonk will remain behind bars based on public safety concerns, according to court records. The attorneys have not yet disclosed the facts about the case in open court.
Bonk remains in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility and the teenager is believed to be held in Juvenile Hall.
