The City of San Diego is in the process of improving University Avenue from 54th Street to Aragon Drive in order to develop safe, dedicated bike lanes.
According to information from El Cerrito Community Council, the project presently calls for only 12 new trees to be planted, despite the reported extreme heat on University Avenue and the critical need to avoid disastorous flooding. According to ECCC, although the University Avenue Bikeway Project will be constructed by SANDAG, only the Mayor’s office is able to approve the addition of trees.
Residents of the Chollas Creek Watershed are reportedly requesting the addition of 160 trees to the University Avenue Bikeway Project. Adequate tree canopy coverage is said to be critical for the health and safety of bikeway users and to mitigate climate impacts on residents. Since University Avenue is El Cerrito’s southern border, the lack of adequate tree canopy impacts El Cerrito residents too.
Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek and the Chollas Creek reportedly said to the city they will supply the trees, install the trees, and maintain them just to get this project done.
For those supporting the addition of 160 trees to the University Bikeway Project, they are asked to sign the following petition: https://forms.gle/oJDL2EwfyoHth7zy8.
