A drunk driver who crashed into another car in Mission Valley while driving the wrong way has pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and faces up to 10 years in state prison.
Cecilia Echeverria, 49, of San Diego, was killed Jan. 13 on Interstate 8 near College Avenue around 12:45 a.m. after being struck by a Honda Civic driven by Briana Michelle Contreras, 25.
Contreras also pleaded guilty to drunk driving and driving the wrong way on a divided highway before San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon.
The judge set sentencing for Sept. 30 at 1:30 p.m. Contreras remains in jail on $500,000 bail.
Several callers reported to the California Highway Patrol that they saw a Honda Civic travel the wrong way on Interstate 8 westbound but the head-on collision occurred before the CHP could pull Contreras over.
Echeverra is survived by her parents, siblings and six nieces and nephews, according to her obituary. She worked as a software quality assurance manager and as an account manager. Echeverria was a woman of faith, her obituary said.
