When you’re on a college basketball team and get to the middle of March, you want reservations to go dancing.
The women’s and men’s basketball teams at San Diego State are headed to March Madness this week.
The women punched their ticket last Wednesday when they defeated Mountain West Conference foe Wyoming for the conference tournament title.
The thrilling triple overtime 72-68 victory gave SDSU its 25th win on the season and its third-ever conference tournament crown. The victory also avenged a pair of regular season losses to the Cowgirls.
SDSU (seeded 14th in the Spokane 1 Region) doesn’t have much time to celebrate the achievement as it begins preparing for this Saturday’s tough road game in Baton Rouge against third-seeded LSU.
Saturday’s game against LSU is slated to be on ESPN at 7:15 p.m. PDT.
On the men’s side, SDSU (seeded 11th) is slated to meet fellow number 11 seed North Carolina in a First Four game Tuesday evening in Dayton, Ohio. The winner of that contest moves on to face sixth-seeded Ole Miss later in the week.
Tuesday’s game will be televised on tru TV and air locally at 6:10 p.m. PDT.
SDSU (21-9) was watching the seeding show this past Sunday anxiously after being on the bubble. The Aztecs dropped a quarterfinal Mountain West Conference tourney game to Boise State (62-52) last Thursday afternoon in Las Vegas. Boise State went on to lose the conference title game to Colorado State last Saturday.
Both SDSU teams hope to be playing into the first weekend/week of April.
The women’s national championship game is Sunday, April 6, with the men’s title game slated for Monday, April 7.
