SeaWorld is one of the largest marine animal rescue organizations in the world, having helped more than 42,000 animals to date. This past week, SeaWorld San Diego’s Rescue Team successfully returned a Pacific Loon to the wild, a seabird known for spending most of its life in coastal waters, after a full rehabilitation.
The loon was originally found stranded at Torrey Pines Beach, covered in tar, which had compromised its ability to stay warm and hindered its natural behavior. The bird was brought to SeaWorld’s Oiled Wildlife Care Center (OWCC), where the team stabilized her with hydration, feeding, and multiple washes to remove the tar. After a month of expert care, the loon regained her strength and was ready to return to her natural habitat.
