The San Diego Museum Council announced the return of its The Big Exchange program, which rewards current museum members and encourages people to become new museum members by offering free reciprocal admission to 50+ participating destinations around San Diego County, including museums, gardens, historic sites, aquariums and more.
The program runs from May 1-18, concluding on International Museum Day. This year’s event is presented by new title sponsor San Diego Foundation as part of its Fifty & Forward Campaign to strengthen San Diego nonprofits for the next 50 years.
“Museum memberships are a great way to enjoy year-round access to San Diego’s world-class cultural institutions,” said Bob Lehman, executive director of the San Diego Museum Council. “The Big Exchange makes these memberships even more valuable and fun, providing an opportunity to ‘test drive’ other destinations all over the county and find a new favorite – at no cost.”
“As we celebrate San Diego Foundation’s 50th anniversary, we’re proud to sponsor local events that bring our community together,” said Mark Stuart, president and CEO of San Diego Foundation, the event’s sponsor. “These gatherings allow us to connect directly with our neighbors and support efforts that align with our vision of just, equitable and resilient communities.”
The program has also grown over the years to include a broader range of San Diego institutions beyond traditional museums, including aquariums, nature and wildlife centers, gardens, historic sites and more.

How it works: During The Big Exchange, members of any participating organizations (see list below or in the digital guide) can simply head to another participating museum and show their membership card for complimentary reciprocal admission.
Digital guide: Download your handy digital guide with all the information you need including links at: sandiegomuseumcouncil.org/specials/the-big-exchange/.
Tip: Not yet a museum member? Contact your favorite museum to join today and ask for a temporary Big Exchange Membership Card to visit other participating sites.
Each membership is reciprocal per guest or membership status. For example, a single membership would enjoy similar access for one attendee at a participating museum. A family membership might enjoy entrance for up to four guests at another participating museum.
Note: The Balboa Park Explorer Pass or Go San Diego Card will not be accepted as part of this program. Reciprocal admission requires proof of current membership from one of the participating museums.
