Albion San Diego defeated Club de Lyon 3-1 at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine on Tuesday evening in the third and last match between the two teams this season.
Albion opened up the scoring in the final seconds of the first half after forward Lennyn Carreon found teammate Tyler Gabarra who took a right-footed shot from just outside the box that got past goalkeeper Josue Mazon.
The home team extended the lead in the 49th minute when Carreon, who came in as a substitute in the first half, was able to force a turnover deep in the Club de Lyon side of the field where he beat Mazon one on one with a shot to the bottom right corner.
The visitors made substitutions themselves which eventually paid off in the 61st minute when forward Kevin Hernandez took advantage of a loose ball from five yards out that goalkeeper Ben Roach could not keep out despite his best efforts.
Club de Lyon continued to push forward looking to tie the match, but Roach came up big a few minutes later when he came off his line to prevent a one-versus-one opportunity with a timely deflection.
Albion San Diego put the game away in the 74th minute when Gabarra found the head of teammate Anthony Patti on a free kick that the defender proceeded to place the ball in the back of the net from close range. Albion had a chance to add one more to its tally late in the game, but the penalty kick attempt by midfielder Daniel Bedoya went wide keeping the final score at 3-1.
The team, led by head coach Diego Gomez, now has 27 points after 15 matches and is four points ahead of the Maryland Bobcats for second place in the NISA standings with the Bobcats having played 16 games so far. Albion San Diego now gets ready to return to its usual home at Canyon Crest Academy where it will take on the LA Force for the fourth time this season on Sunday, Aug. 13.
