Nearly 250 years ago American Patriots fought and sacrificed for the freedoms Americans enjoy today.
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recognizes not only soldiers, but anyone who contributed to the cause of American freedom including descendants of Spaniards and the Dutch who supported the revolution monetarily and with supplies. Any woman 18 years of older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership.
The DAR has nearly 190,000 members in nearly 3,000 chapters worldwide, including chapters in 14 foreign countries and one territory. Since its founding in 1890 DAR has admitted more than 1 million members. To find out more go to dar.org and click on membership. There you will find helpful instructions, advice on finding your lineage and a Prospective Member Information Request form. DAR volunteers are willing to provide guidance and assistance with your first step into the world of genealogy.
After the annual summer hiatus, the local Letitia Coxe Shelby Daughters of the American Revolution will resume monthly meetings the first Friday of every month beginning Sept. 6.
Meetings are open to the public. Anyone interested in attending may contact [email protected] for meeting location information. You can also visit lamesa.californiadar.org/ for more information.
