A Whole Site Modernization project is underway for Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary School at 2445 Fogg St. The school offers a Mandarin Chinese immersion program giving students from K-5 instruction in core academics in both English and Mandarin Chinese. The cost of Whole Site Modernization is projected to exceed $15 million with an anticipated construction start in the summer of 2023.
The Whole Site Modernization project includes the construction of a new kindergarten building to replace aging portable classrooms; modernization of existing classroom buildings with interior and exterior finish upgrades; renovation of the admin building including secure single-point entry to the school; addition of new student-parent drop off by extending the existing parking lot; and modernization of the multi-purpose building. The project will also include upgrades to site accessibility, security, restrooms, and additional site work. The project will also provide new shade shelters, play structures, and a new outdoor collaborative teaching and learning space.
Barnard offers Transitional K-5 instruction in a unique and exciting environment for students. The Mandarin Chinese Students are immersed in Mandarin Chinese during portions of the school day, with some subjects taught in Mandarin, and others in English. Enrichment units include the study of Chinese literature and culture. Since 2007, Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary School has been a unique school that is helping the next generation learn a new language (or grow in their native language) and be better prepared to be part of the global economy as an adult.
