World Team Tennis Junior Nationals slated for Aug. 2-4 For more than 15 years, the Barnes Tennis Center has hosted the World Team Tennis (WTT) Junior Nationals, which are under the direction of tennis legend Billie Jean King. This year’s tournament will be held from Aug. 2-4 with 16 co-ed teams from around the United States competing. The age range is 14-18 and team members are selected based on their sectional and national rankings. However, they cannot compete in the tournament if they attain ranking of 1-150 on the USTA seed-selection list as of May 15. King, who always attends the event and is very active giving both on- and off-court presentations, said previously that one of the main goals is to give junior players who are not highly ranked an opportunity to compete in a national tournament. Last year, the San Diego team finished in third place. The event is open to the public and free of charge. The Barnes Tennis Center is located at 4490 W. Point Loma Blvd. For more information, call (619) 221-9000, or visit www.wtt.com and look under “Local leagues & tournaments.” National girls’ 16s and 18s tennis tournament runs Aug. 5-14 Many of the top junior girl tennis players in the United States will be competing in the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Girls’ 16s and 18s Nationals from Aug. 5-14 at the Barnes Tennis Center. This year marks the 22nd year the National Girls’16s have been played in San Diego and the second year both the 16s and 18s have been combined, totaling around 400 participants and representing almost every state. In addition to the Barnes Tennis Center, matches will also be played at San Diego State University and University of San Diego. The tournament is open to the public and free of charge.
