Peninsula Beacon contributor Scott Hopkins earned multiple awards at the San Diego Press Club’s 51st annual Excellence in Journalism competition.
A first-place plaque for Sports Writing went to Hopkins, 75, for his story about a frustrating Point Loma football loss last year against Rancho Bernardo despite gaining twice the yardage of the Broncos.
His account of a “Junior Pointer” football camp for area youngsters earned him another first-place plaque in the category of Feature Writing (Light Subject).
In Photography (Still), two of Hopkins’ photos from Pointer’s athletic events earned recognition.
A baseball photo of Pointer catcher Hunter Reddeg tagging out a Cathedral Catholic baserunner at home plate received a second-place certificate.
And a football image of Pointer alum Ryan Burdine making a difficult over-the-shoulder touchdown catch against Morse High School garnered an Honorable Mention.
Entries in the competition were published between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024.
The work of Hopkins, a retired educator, has been seen in The Peninsula Beacon since 2008.
