The Bishop’s School football team found last Saturday afternoon to its liking, rolling to a 42-0 win at Webb High.
Junior Saron Hood intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown (27 yards) on the fifth play of the game.
Junior quarterback Tommy Wornham was 8-for-14, with four touchdowns and 240 yards. Tim Costello caught three passes for 115 yards and three TDs. Hood had two catches for 80 yards and one touchdown.
On defense, Michael Strauss had nine tackles while Patrick Carrillo and Chase Jensen had eight apiece. Mike P. Jensen got his second interception of the season.
Bishop’s will have a test on its hands this Saturday evening when the Knights face St. Margaret’s at La Jolla High School at 7 p.m. St. Margaret’s is currently 3-0, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section and has a 16-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, La Jolla High did not enjoy its weekend, dropping a 35-0 decision at Central High in El Centro.
Central forced seven La Jolla High turnovers en route to the win. The Spartans gained 330 yards for the evening, 315 of them on the ground, while holding the Vikings to just 98 yards rushing and 68 yards passing. Tailback Yien Gatkuoth finished the evening with 60 yards on eight carries and fullback Ja’Rood Watson had 31 yards on five carries.
“I believe that everyone in our program, from coaches to players, is very disappointed in the way we played,” La Jolla High Head Coach Dave Ponsford said afterward. “We just made too many mental mistakes against a football team that was better than us. But, we need to pick ourselves up because this week we open league play against a ranked team in Point Loma.”
The Vikings and Pointers will meet Friday night in La Jolla at 7 p.m.
La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School also went down to defeat, dropping a 6-3 decision to host Army Navy Academy.
“As the score indicates, the game was a defensive battle with neither team being able to produce much offense,” LJCD Head Coach Jeff Hutzler noted.
Up front, the Torreys struggled mightily with the large defensive line of ANA and could produce virtually no running game. It did not help matters that LJCD lost senior tailback/safety Kevin Ings to a hip injury on the first play from scrimmage. Senior fullback Collin Tuck led all LJCD runners with 53 yards on 13 carries.
Forced to put the ball in the air 35 times, senior QB Matt Mulligan completed 18 passes for 153 yards while throwing three interceptions. Senior TE Mark Schu led all receivers with six catches for 64 yards.
The Torreys’ lone score came on a 53-yard field goal in the first quarter by junior kicker Travis Golia. Golia had a 34-yard field goal attempt fall short in the second quarter.
LJCD’s defense played hard but suffered too many missed tackles, most notably during ANA’s 37-yard TD strike in the second quarter when Army Navy’s receiver was touched by no less than five Torrey defenders but not brought down.
At linebacker, Tuck had an outstanding defensive afternoon, racking up 16 tackles (10 solos), two blocked punts and a fumble recovered.
In junior varsity action, LJCD beat ANA 35-8.
LJCD enters Pacific League play Friday night at Midway Baptist in a 7 p.m. contest.
