Blues guitarist Jackie Venson ‘Flying’ to Tio Leo’s

Austin-based guitarist Jackie Venson performs at Tio Leo’s on Sept. 16. Although known for her blues guitar playing, don’t expect recycled versions of “Red House.” For Venson, it’s all about her original music, with two albums and a pair of EP’s to her credit since her 2013 recording debut. While there are touches of blues in her set, songs such as recent single, “Next Life,” are terrific piano-based soul tracks topped by her fiery guitar playing. Although currently considered a regional artist, Venson is quickly breaking out on a national level. With infectious dance tinged songs such as her new single “Flying,” it won’t be long before she’s playing much bigger rooms than this. Jackie Venson: Saturday, Sept. 16 at Tio Leo’s, 5302 Napa St. 9 p.m. 21 and up. www.tioleos.com Legendary songwriter Peter Case performs at Grassroots Oasis on Sept. 14. Perhaps best known for his work with The Plimsouls, Case recently released the self-descriptive album, “Lost Songs & Outside Favorites,” collecting outtakes and rare performances, but anywhere you start in his discography you are going to turn up plenty of gems. An engaging performer, Case has a vast catalog of tunes, from socially conscious blues covers to recast versions of his power-pop hits such as “A Million Miles Away,” and “When You Find Out,” all are well worth investigating. Peter Case: Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Grassroots Oasis , 3130 Moore St. 7:30 p.m. All ages. www.grassrootsoasis.com If you look up the word “prolific” in an encyclopedia, there’s a good chance you’ll come across a photo of Gregory Page. Appearing at Java Joe’s on Sept. 15, he’s a gifted troubadour in the tradition of Al Bowly. Page is currently touring behind his most recent album, “so it goes,” a brilliant production from start to finish. Page is a master storyteller, filling his songs with poignant characters and situations that will bring a tear to the eye and touch your heart. The new album features strings and harmony vocals, but live, in stripped down acoustic mode, is the best way to hear Page’s music, so you can take in every word. Gregory Page: Friday, Sept. 15 at Java Joe’s, 2611 Congress St. 8 p.m. www.javajoessd.com Anyone who enjoys country music should be making Moonshine Beach a regular haunt. Featuring occasional cover bands as well as national up and coming talent, anyone looking for emerging artist will want to check out their monthly schedule. On Sept. 22 the venue will host a performance from Florida native Ryan Griffin. Mixing elements of country with soul and pop, Griffin pens heartfelt radio friendly laments such as “Woulda Left Me Too.” Griffin’s material has plenty of cross over potential, with universal themes, perfect for any bar room but with stadium potential. Ryan Griffin: Friday, Sept. 22 at Moonshine Beach 1165 Garnet Ave., 9 p.m.
www.moonshinebeachsd.com Classic rockers Stone Horse perform aboard the Bahia Belle on Sept. 22. While you float around Mission Bay you’ll be treated to songs from their latest album, “Nobody Rides For Free,” as well as favorites from the likes of Rick Derringer, Chicago and the Rolling Stones. The band is solid, with Carlos Rodriguez an excellent band leader, but the band MVP is easily Danielle Spade, whose Joplin-esque stage presence is a perfect match for the material. With a dance floor, drinks, great music and a wonderful view, this is a nice way to kick off your weekend. Stone Horse: Friday, Sept. 22 at the Bahia Resort, 998 West Mission Bay Drive. 9:30 p.m. 21 and up. www.bahiabelle.com Acclaimed acoustic guitarist Fred Benedetti has put together several shows celebrating the music of the Beatles, but on Sept. 23 at Dizzy’s, he will stretch the format a bit to include further artists of the era with a show called, “The Summer of Love 1967.” Joined by his daughters, Regina and Julia, multi-instrumentalist Jeff Pekarek and drummer James Morton, Benedetti will perform his take on classic songs by the likes of the Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead and more. Fans of ’60s rock will like the show, but anyone who enjoys virtuoso guitar work will also love the night’s music. Fred Benedetti: Saturday, Sept. 23, at Dizzy’s at Arias Hall, 1717 Morena Blvd. 8 p.m. www.dizzysjazz.com.
