Several local scholastic girls soccer teams are getting a kick out of the 2007-’08 season.
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights under head coach Brian Quinn came into this week with a record of 4-3.
“We started the season against three powerhouse teams ” Poway, Cathedral Catholic and Carlsbad,” Quinn said. “Even though we had lost three games, I felt we were the best 0-3 team in the county. Since then the girls have won four in a row, with two big wins against La Costa Canyon and Rancho Bernardo High School, which could have gone either way.”
Quinn noted the defensive play of Bree Geary and Stevie Griglak, who have been stellar while on the attacking front. Francis Harvey, Annie Kadota, Lindsey Holman-Kelly and freshman Kaylie Davidson have provided the scoring.
At La Jolla High, head coach Kristin Jones and the Lady Vikings recently captured the Barons Tournament. La Jolla came into play this week at 9-0. Freshman Callan Parra and junior Nihal Kayali are in the top five in the county in offensive statistics.
“Simi Sharp, Gina Schumacher and Tess Plant-Thomas are anchoring a defense that has only given up two goals all season,” Jones said. “I am very happy with the way the season is going as of now, but we know the league (Western) will be tough. We are looking to carry this momentum into the new year.”
In its last game before the Christmas break, La Jolla scored a 5-0 win over Clairemont. Parra had a pair of goals in that victory, with Lauren Steinmetz getting the shutout.
At La Jolla Country Day School, head coach Dave Jenkins and the Lady Torreys return to play on Jan. 8, when they meet La Jolla.
La Jolla defeated LJCD 4-1 last month in Barons Tournament action.
