The Point Loma boys soccer team will play for a CIF championship. The No. 7 seeded boys dominated No. 3 La Costa Canyon 3-1 Wednesday night to earn a spot in the final against No. 9 Steele Canyon. The title match will be played on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 at Madison High School.
Senior Ethan Denney stunned the Mavericks, scoring the game’s first goal just two minutes after it began. Junior Fin Rohnow doubled the lead five minutes into the second half. And later, during injury time, Denney raced down a loose ball that the Mavericks’ goalkeeper misplayed before tipping it into the net as he sprinted past the goal.
The Pointer boys soccer team has again begun to play at a championship-caliber level at playoff time.
Last year, the team left behind a so-so 6-10-2 mid-season record and won seven straight games including a CIF Div. I championship and a 3-2 win over El Dorado of Placentia (20-4-3) for the regional Southern California title.
