Bernadine Halbert, 84, of Point Loma, peacefully passed away in her home that she loved. She was born and raised in Kansas City, Mo. and considered herself to be a “city girl.”
After graduation from business school and working for Skelly Oil Co., she came to San Diego to visit her sister. She met her husband, Mike, on the dance floor. Their love of dancing led to 55 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 2001.
When her children were small, she was active in PTA, Girl & Boy Scouts and Little League. She held several leadership roles in the Junior/Senior Women’s Clubs of San Diego and the Doctors Hospital Auxiliary.
When her children were in high school she resumed her second career with the county Assessor’s Office, from which she was an honored retiree. Bernie’s priorities were always family, friends and neighbors, and she was an avid bridge player. She will leave an empty spot in everyone’s heart that she touched.
Bernie is survived by her son, Michael J. (Lois) Halbert of San Diego; daughter, Julie Ann (Richard) Mason of Battle Ground, Wash.; grandchildren Denise Parenteau, Sarrah Harvey and Michael J. Halbert; stepgrandchildren, Ricardo Diaz, Carson and Chelsea Hodges, Michelle and Scott (Teri) Mason and great-granddaughter, Skyler Mason.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Brock and Ruth Fleming; sister Maxine Fordyce; and brothers Clay, Donald, Joseph and Roy Fleming.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life at the family home in Point Loma on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 4 to 8 p.m.
