The City of San Diego is seeking an individual or organization to lease, renovate and maintain the Mission Trails Golf Course and its facilities, which are nestled alongside Lake Murray. The golf course, a neighborhood staple located on Golfcrest Place, plays host to tournaments, training programs and other events year-round.
The City this week issued a Request for Proposals for the 147-acre property. In addition to maintaining the 18-hole golf course and rehabilitating the driving range, the City is looking for a lessee that can renovate the clubhouse, which includes a pro shop, banquet room, kitchen and bar. The City would also like the lessee to provide food options and concessions to the public, transforming the golf course into an entertainment destination for golfers and non-golfers alike.
The lessee would also be responsible for maintaining the golf course’s scenic and ecological integrity.
This includes ensuring any developments or activities are compatible with the preservation of native habitats and species in the surrounding areas. The lessee would need to implement a quarterly plan to remove golf balls from Lake Murray to prevent safety and environmental hazards within the area.
“Mission Trails Golf Course brings a wealth of environmental benefits and economic impacts to its community and the entire city of San Diego,” said Economic Development Director Christina Bibler. “With the right lessee, this picturesque course can continue to be an asset to the city and serve residents and tourists for years to come.”
The golf course has a storied past, as it hosted Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods early in their careers. It was first designed and created by architect William P. Bell in 1964.
When selecting a lessee, the City will consider the proposer’s approach to meeting the City’s objectives, their financial capability and their experience and qualifications in operating a golf course. The City expects to negotiate the terms of the lease after a proposal is selected.
The Request for Proposals can be accessed through the City’s website.
To give proposers an opportunity to view the golf course, staff will conduct site visits on March 6 and March 11.
Proposals must then be submitted by 4 p.m. PDT on April 11.
