Community news and briefs for Pacific Beach and Mission Beach

SALT MARSH INTERACTION DAY Students from Mission Bay High School are holding a Salt Marsh Interaction Day at the Kendall-Frost Marsh Reserve, 2055 Pacific Beach Drive, 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 6. Students and other volunteers plan to remove invasive species, plant native species, and beautify the marsh. There will also be kid-friendly events such as art projects and birdwatching. Kendall-Frost Marsh Reserve is a 20-acre University of California Natural Reserve System reserve on the northern shore of Mission Bay. Administered by UC San Diego, the site is owned by the University of California and managed for teaching and research.  SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC AT CROWN POINT The 46th annual San Diego Crew Classic will take place 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 6-7 at Crown Point Park. Come see the beautiful setting along the shoreline where people in attendance will get to experience the city view, sunshine, and have access to food trucks, and a diverse offering of craft beers, cider, and wine. Tickets are $15 plus a $2.50 fee for general admission for Saturday and Sunday, and can be bought on eventbrite.com. Youth are free, as well as those in the military. For more information on the event itself, check out classiccrew.org, or contact Luke Walton at luke@classiccrew.org or at 619-225-0300. PACIFIC BEACH BUSINESS AWARDS PRESENTED Discover Pacific Beach held the 2019 Casino Night and Awards on March 28 aboard the William D Evans Sternwheeler. The night consisted of lively casino game action, a three-course meal by Bahia Hotel and an award ceremony celebrating outstanding businesses and volunteers. “The annual Casino Night and Awards is a great opportunity to celebrate the diverse business mix we have in PB,” said Sara Berns, Discover PB executive director. “It’s great to see business owners from restaurants, pet shops and realties all gather together and have a chance to connect as well as an opportunity for us to thank all of those that support Discover PB throughout the year.” The results: New Business Award – The Facility Dance Studio; Design and Improvement Award – Maverick’s Beach Club; Heart of PB Award – Crown Point Coffee; Community volunteer – Brian Dunlap, The Mad Beet; Community patron – Jacob Gelfand, Campland on the Bay; and Duran-Galliher Community Spirit – Debbie Conca, Mr. Frosties. BE PATIENT DURING SPRING BREAK IN PB Due to the different school systems and diversity of visitors, spring break iruns through March and April, said Sara Berns, executive director of Discover PB. “We encourage people to be patient and hospitable, of course, as we are a leading visitor site in San Diego. There are families who save for more than a year to take vacations, and with the world becoming more accessible, what used to be a given isn’t necessarily any more,” said Berns. “Many of our small businesses depend on the tourist season, and those are your neighbors and friends.” Continued Berns: “So if you find yourself behind someone driving a little too slow with Arizona plates, keep these things in mind before yelling ‘Go home zonie!’ Of course, as always, we want people to be safe and get out and enjoy what will hopefully be our renowned weather soon.” CONSTRUCTION UNDER WAY ON TROLLEY TUNNEL Crews have begun work in preparation for construction of the Trolley underpass at La Jolla Colony Drive. To accommodate construction, lanes on La Jolla Colony Drive will be reconfigured to provide one lane in each direction. Construction is expected to be complete by late 2019. Some full weeknight and weekend closures may be required throughout construction, during which time, there will be no access to La Jolla Colony Drive from east of the Interstate 5 on- and off-ramps to Rosenda Court. One lane of northbound and southbound traffic will remain open on La Jolla Colony Drive, except during intermittent closures. Access to Rosenda Court and to Gilman Drive West will remain open, except during intermittent closures. Work will be scheduled Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. when weeknight closures are necessary. Detour routes and signage will be in place with those passing through urged to heed all traffic signs and use caution when traveling near the work area. Work activities will include drilling, road widening, excavation, removal of dirt and concrete construction. This work requires the use of heavy machinery and will generate noise. Crews will minimize impacts as much as possible. SANTA FE STREET PARKING REDUCTIONS NEXT MONTH Within the next month, crews will begin the permanent removal of parking on the west side of Santa Fe Street, between Karl Strauss Brewing Co. (5965 Santa Fe St.) and Coventry Cars of San Diego (5097 Santa Fe St.), in preparation for construction of the Rose Creek Bikeway.  Portions of Santa Fe Street will be intermittently reduced to a single lane to accommodate construction. Access to businesses will be maintained. Construction will generally take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but night and weekend work may also be required. Work activities will include utility work, drainage improvement, street widening, and bikeway construction. Crews will minimize impacts as much as possible. During construction, access to all properties will be maintained. People passing through the area are urged to follow all posted traffic signage and traffic controls. NEW SEAWORLD ROLLER COASTER TO OPEN IN MAY The unique dueling roller coaster ride, Tidal Twister, featuring high-speed turns and upside-down twists is scheduled to open at SeaWorld on May 24. The first of its kind in the world, this unique ride is an exhilarating experience that demonstrates the power of the ocean. Accelerating to 30 mph, riders will twist and bank as if they are riding the tide along a tight figure-8 track that includes dynamic Zero-G roll at the center section. Two trains, holding 16 passengers each, load at opposite ends of the figure-8 and cross in the center with guests facing both forward and backward on the trains.
