Following the success of last year’s event, Cans4Books with Après Surf Club will hold the second annual Earth Day Beach Cleanup at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at Tourmaline Surfing Park. This year’s cleanup will unite volunteers, community partners, and eco-conscious brands for a day of impact, education, and celebration.
Last year, the event drew more than 100 community members and resulted in the collection of 174 pounds of litter, all of which was carefully sorted into recyclables, compost, repurposed materials, and landfill.
This year, Cans4Books is aiming even higher – and will be joined by a special guest, Reef the Recycling Whale, a larger-than-life interactive mascot promoting sustainability education. She is Cans4Books’ newest member, made out of repurposed materials, and can hold 75 to 100 pounds of CRV aluminum cans.
The event is co-hosted by Après Surf Club and Surf Lounge, and will conclude with a celebratory après gathering at Surf Lounge, featuring an opportunity drawing with prizes provided by sponsors LSKD, Moon Glow Well, The Haus of Movement, Soul Plunge, and Hair by Marisa.
All are welcome to attend. Volunteers can sign up here: Sign Up Link.
Monetary donations are also encouraged, supporting Cans4Books’ mission of providing free, accessible children’s books through recycling initiatives. Donations will further fund the ongoing migration of Reef the Recycling Whale, a mobile sustainability education platform.
“This event is about so much more than just cleaning the beach – it’s about building community, empowering youth, and educating the next generation on how their micro acts brought together can make a macro impact,” said Trisha Goolsby, founder of Cans4Books.
