Born in England in 1836, Ellen Browning Scripps moved to the United States and became wealthy through her family’s newspaper empire. FOUNDING THE SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY

Scripps never married and had no children, dedicating her life to her work and the betterment of the La Jolla community. She is interred at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.
