SPOTLIGHT
Former Beatle Ringo Starr (above) brings his All-Star Band to Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay on Sept. 7. This year’s lineup of musicians performing with Starr includes Steve Lukather (Toto), Edgar Winter, Colin Hay (Men At Work), Warren Ham (Kansas, Toto), Hamish Stuart (Average White Band), and Gregg Bissonette, which means the night’s set list will be heavy with classic rock songs such as “Frankenstein,” “Hold The Line,” “Down Under” and “Pick Up The Pieces.” Although Starr released a new EP, “Crooked Boy,” earlier this year, no songs from the disc will make it to the stage this night. Instead, the bulk of the night’s set will be dedicated to Starr, with plenty of hits from both his solo and Beatles career, including sing-a-long favorites, “Yellow Submarine” and “With A Little Help From My Friends.” If you’ve ever wanted to see a Beatle in concert, this relatively intimate performance from Ringo and friends shouldn’t be passed up.
Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band: Saturday, Sept. 7 at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay, 2241 Shelter Island Drive. 8 p.m. $231. humphreysconcerts.com.

One of the hottest bands going, horn-backed reggae group, Sandollar, will perform at the 710 Beach Club on Aug. 31. Over the past few years, the Ocean Beach-based band has become festival favorites, headlining the likes of the OB Street Fair and Pacific Records Fest, with songs showing up on TV programs such as Netflix’s “Outer Banks” and their album, “Under the Water,” taking home a trophy for “Best World Album,” at the 2023 San Diego Music Awards. The success is well deserved, with such songs as “Up Up” and “San Diego Girl,” both instant earworms and about as radio-friendly as it gets.
Sandollar: Saturday, Aug. 31 at the 710 Beach Club, 710 Garnet Ave. 9 p.m. 710bc.com.
A new season of multi-artist concert series, Acoustic Evenings, kicks off on Sept. 6 at the Athenaeum. Hosted by Jefferson Jay, the night will feature performances from Wax, Jesus Gonzalez, and Rob Deez. All are noteworthy performers, but Los Angeles-based rapper, Wax, is likely the best known, having scored a European hit in 2012 with the song, “Rosana,” as well as releasing numerous popular videos, including ode to bike riding, “Two Wheels.” His tunes mix beats, melody, and a bit of humor to good effect. The Acoustic Evenings concert series is a great way for listeners to discover new artists, in one of San Diego’s best listening rooms.
Acoustic Evenings: Friday, Sept. 6 at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, 1008 Wall St. 7:30 p.m. ljathenaeum.org.
World music aficionados won’t want to miss a performance from Tonga native, Samisi Ma’u, at the La Jolla Community Center on Sept. 6. Though he often plays with a full band, for this show he will be in acoustic troubadour mode. Ma’u performs a unique style of music he has dubbed “Bula,” binding Tongan influences with classical, rock, blues, and jazz, essentially creating his brand of folk music. Singing in both English and Tongan, Ma’u’s performances are engaging, with between-song storytelling and anecdotes on song creation being part of the fun.
Semisi Ma’U: Friday, Sept. 6 at the La Jolla Community Center, 6811 La Jolla Blvd. Noon. Free. ljcommunitycenter.org.
On Sept. 8, two of San Diego’s most gifted musicians, guitarist Patrick Yandall and singer Rebecca Jade, join forces for a special show at Humphrey’s Backstage Live. The occasion is a release party for Yandall’s latest album, “You Will Be Alright,” an excellent 13-song showcase for his instrumental funk-tinged smooth jazz sounds. Meanwhile, Jade, who has performed with everyone from Elton John to Dave Koz, also has much to celebrate. Just back from concert dates in Greece, she recently released a new single, “Insane,” with more touring, including performances in Italy and the Netherlands, kicking off later this month. Anyone who enjoys R&B, jazz, or funk, will find much to appreciate at this show.
Patrick Yandall and Rebecca Jade: Sunday, Sept. 8 at Humphrey’s Backstage Live, 2241 Shelter Island Drive. 6 p.m. $18-$24. humphreysbackstagelive.com.
